TL; DR
  • iPhone Fold trial production has begun at Foxconn, targeting a July mass-production start.
  • GSMArena reports an on-track fall launch; Nikkei Asia flags possible engineering delays.
  • Leaked CAD drawings reveal a 7.76-inch inner display and an ultra-slim 4.8mm unfolded profile.

Apple’s long-awaited iPhone Fold is no longer a rumor — it’s a prototype that’s being tested on factory floors. According to a Weibo tipster, trial production of the purported Apple foldable has kicked off at Foxconn (Apple’s primary manufacturing partner in China). This puts the device on track for a July mass production start alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

However, before you start clearing up space in your wallet, the picture isn’t all rosy. Apart from the tipster, there’s another source that’s claiming that the iPhone Fold’s development has hit technical snags, which could eventually delay the launch, or at least the public availability of the smartphone. So, what’s happening? Let’s find out.

Is The iPhone Fold Actually Coming This Fall?

It is the Chinese tipster Instant Digital who claims that Foxconn has already begun trial production of the iPhone Fold. Furthermore, the tipster also adds that “barring any unforeseen circumstances, the iPhone Fold’s foldable screen will begin mass production around July.”

However, a Nikkei Asia report throws a bucket of cold water on the excitement. The report claims that the iPhone Fold is wrestling with engineering issues that could delay shipments. Although the report doesn’t highlight the nature of the development snags, it could be the advanced crease-free design that’s taking longer to perfect than initially expected, especially for mass manufacturing.

This particular rumor corroborates the reports about the iPhone Fold’s delayed arrival. The foldable might be teased or showcased at the September 2026 launch event (with the iPhone 18 Pro models), but it might not go on sale until December 2026.

What Do We Know About Apple’s First Foldable iPhone?

Meanwhile, leaked CAD drawings by iPhone Ticker give us the clearest look yet at the hardware. When folded, the device measures 83.8 x 120.6 x 9.6 mm, while unfolded, the thickness drops to an impressive 4.8 mm (though still not quite as thin as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 at 4.2 mm).

The foldable iPhone might unfold into a 7.6-inch screen with a 2713 x 1920-pixel resolution (slightly smaller than the iPad mini). Furthermore, a dual-rear camera system, similar to the one on the iPhone 17, is also evident in the schematics.

Foldables have long been Samsung’s territory, especially given the company’s global presence. However, Apple’s entry into the category is of utmost importance for two reasons. First, it signals mainstream validation of the foldable design. Second, the company’s scale of operations and fan following are perhaps best suited (and all set) to rival Samsung.
