Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is set to unveil a new smartphone, to be reportedly called U Play, as part of its new U series at its ‘For U’ event on 12th January. Expected to be launched alongside the U Ultra phablet, the phone is being considered to be a smaller version of the same.

The HTC U Play would be brought out to cater to the mid-range market and will be out in the first quarter of the year. Codenamed Alpine, the phone will output audio via its USB Type-C port rather than the conventional 3.5mm audio jack, following the likes of LeEco, Moto, and of course, Apple.

It reportedly has a 5.2-inch display and a dual-curved screen, much like in the case of the Galaxy S7 Edge. The company has kept mum on all the other details and it appears that people will have to wait for the coming Thursday to get privy to other specifications of both the U Play as well as its bigger counterpart, the U Ultra.

HTC might also launch a third smartphone, HTC One X10, at the January 12 event. The aforementioned successor of One X9 is rumored to sport a 5.5-inch FHD display and a MediaTek octa-core SoC.

The buzz generated around these smartphones is a welcome change to the currently struggling company, and has a lot riding on them considering the fact that they are being
unveiled in an independent event rather than the CES 2017.

However, until HTC reveals the official hardware specifications, unconfirmed details remain subject to change.
