Recently, I handed over my OPPO Find X8 Pro to a friend to capture some macro shots. But the results were not quite there. Turns out, he wasn’t quite using the camera right for macro photography, which got me frustrated. So, I decided to teach him how to take proper macros, and then I thought—why not share the process with everyone here?
With the OPPO Find X8 Pro, when you switch to macro mode, the camera typically uses the ultrawide or main lens to crop in for close-ups. This often results in lower-quality images. The main issue? Neither of these lenses is good for macro photography. Add to that the 3x telephoto lens’s 50 cm minimum focusing distance, which isn’t ideal for extreme close-ups.
But don’t worry—the Find X8 Pro has a secret weapon: the 6x lens. This 135 mm telephoto lens, with an f/4.3 aperture, is perfect for macro shots. Its 35cm minimum focusing distance allows you to get closer to your subject and capture stunning details. Here’s how to unlock the full potential of your OPPO Find X8 Pro for macro photography.

Before We Start
Lighting plays a crucial role in macro photography. Natural daylight works best, giving you consistent and vibrant colors. However, avoid harsh sunlight if possible, as it can create harsh shadows.
If harsh light is unavoidable, don’t worry; try to manage the conditions by repositioning your subject or adjusting your angles to reduce the impact.
Stability is equally (or even more) important. Holding your phone steady ensures crisp and sharp images, especially at higher zoom levels.
Now, this is optional: when pressing the shutter, pause your breathing momentarily to minimize movement. Even slight vibrations can blur the details in close-up shots.

Step-by-Step Guide to Macro on the OPPO Find X8 Pro
To start, open the camera app and switch to the 6x lens, which is the 135 mm periscope lens. Unlike the macro mode that relies on cropping, this lens provides the clarity and detail needed for macro shots by allowing you to get closer.
Get closer
Speaking of, move closer to your subject until it begins to lose focus. Then, pull back slightly to find the perfect focusing distance of 35cm.
Or even closer
If your subject is smaller, you can zoom in further by tapping the 6x option again, which takes you to 13.3x (300 mm digital crop). For even smaller subjects or details, tap once more to zoom into 26.6x. You can even go beyond that if you really want to.
These advanced zoom levels allow you to capture intricate textures and patterns that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. But remember, as you get closer and closer (the more you zoom in), stabilization becomes more and more important.
Keep still and shoot multiple photos
While shooting, remember to take multiple photos. That said, avoid shooting in burst mode because that captures very low quality images. Keep tapping the shutter manually multiple times.
Edit and post
Afterward, review your images and select the best one to edit (or just post it as it is). I don’t edit my photos 90% of the time.
Here’s a video demonstrating the entire process. The shaky part at the beginning is where I was trying to adjust the phone to 35cm.

Pro Tips for Stunning Macro Shots
Keep the Subject Still: If you’re shooting insects, avoid sudden movements that might scare them off. You have to be stealthy and avoid any unnecessary movement.
Stay Patient: Macro photography requires precision, so take your time. It’s one of the most challenging photography genres.
Experiment with Angles: Try out different perspectives that can make your shots stand out. Low angles and side angles are great. Shooting the eye of an insect is also great.
Good Lighting is Your Best Friend: Again, lighting remains crucial throughout the process. Softer, diffused light can elevate the quality of your shots, so if possible, use indirect light sources or natural shade. This minimizes harsh shadows and enhances the subject’s textures.
