I’ll be honest—when foldable phones first hit the scene, I wasn’t sold (nobody was either). They felt like fancy toys for tech enthusiasts with too much money and not enough sense. A phone that bends in half? Sure, it’s cool, but how long before it snaps like a cheap plastic ruler? 

Fast forward to 2025, and I’ve got to eat my words. These devices have evolved from fragile experiments into good daily drivers. But the big question remains: how durable are they really? And which ones are the toughest of the bunch?

Well, we have a lot of options today: the OPPO Find N5, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Vivo X Fold3 Pro. Let’s break it all down.

How Durable Are Foldables?

Before we jump into the specifics, let’s talk about why durability is the make-or-break factor for foldables. When it comes to regular slab phones, you can drop them, scratch them, and they’ll probably survive a year or two without much fuss. 

But for foldables, that’s not really the case. These have moving parts—hinges that flex thousands of times, screens that crease, and designs that scream “handle with care.” A flimsy hinge or a weak frame could turn your $1,500 investment into a fancy paperweight (or e-waste).

So, when I say durability, I’m looking at how well these phones handle drops, dust, water, and the endless folding and unfolding of daily life. Foldables have come a long way when it comes to durability, though. 

Hinges have gotten smoother and slimmer and we have started seeing proper IP ratings on these devices. The Galaxy Z Fold6, for example, features an IP48 rating, where 4 stands for dust resistance against particles >1 mm and 8 stands for water resistance.

And it doesn’t just end there, the OPPO Find N5, touted as the world’s thinnest foldable, features IPX9 rating as well, alongside the IPX6 and IPX9 ratings. It’s truly amazing to see how far we’ve come. 

I think it’s safe to say that foldables are now mature enough to be used by the masses, without having to worry too much about durability. Sure, there’s still the fear of dust and the crease getting worse over time, but the current durability of foldables is still good.

1. OPPO Find N5

If foldables were a beauty pageant, the OPPO Find N5 would strut out as the sleek, confident newcomer stealing the spotlight. This thing is billed as the world’s thinnest foldable—just 4.21 mm unfolded and 8.93 mm folded. For context, that’s thinner than a pencil, which is wild for a phone that opens into an 8.2-inch tablet. 

But thin doesn’t mean weak, right? OPPO’s betting big on that idea.

The star of the durability show here is the Titanium Alloy Flexion Hinge. Made from aerospace-grade Grade 5 titanium alloy (the same stuff in Boeing jets and Mars rovers), this hinge is 3D-printed for precision and boasts 36% higher rigidity than its predecessor in the Find N3. 

OPPO claims it has tested for 100,000 folds under extreme conditions—50°C heat and -20°C cold—and it’s earned a TÜV Rheinland Reliable Folding Certification. That’s roughly 10 years of use if you’re flipping it open 25 times a day. 

Beyond the hinge, the Find N5 features an IPX6 + IPX8 + IPX9 rating, meaning it laughs off water—splashes, submersion, even high-pressure jets. The front glass is 20% tougher than the Find N3’s, and the inner screen’s shock resistance is up 70%.

It holds up well against dust and impact, and the IP48 rating covers both dust (larger than 1mm) and water resistance. The outer screen uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and so does the glass back.

The vivo X Fold3 Pro (review) is a serious contender, balancing size and durability. At 236g with an 11.2 mm folded profile, it’s lighter than the Pixel but thicker than the Fold6. Yet, its build quality sets it apart.

The hinge, reinforced with a carbon fiber skeleton, is rated for 500,000 folds—far beyond rivals. vivo claims it can last 13 years with 100 folds a day, making it the most durable on paper. 

It also has an IPX8 rating for water resistance and a sturdy aluminum alloy frame. Drop tests show it holds up well, and the hinge is strong enough to support its own weight when half-open.
