Corning Launches Gorilla Glass 5 That Can Resist 1.6 Meter Falls

0

Corning Gorilla Glass has never been impervious to damage but is slowly getting there. Corning just announced the new Gorilla Glass 5, which is can withstand 1.6 meter drops on “unforgiving” asphalt around 80 percent of the time.

In comparison, the Gorilla Glass 4 has the same survival rate for drops from 1.0 Meter height. While improving damage resistance, the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 doesn’t compromise on other touch glass attributes like scratch resistance, optical clarity, and touch sensitivity.

Even when most users protect their investment with a tempered glass or screen protector as soon as they buy a new smartphone, Corning’s glasses have always been in high consumer demand. Besides, smartphones aren’t the only product they are used for. Gorilla Glass is now present on 4.5 Billion devices including use in Smartphones, Slates/Tablets, Notebooks, Interior Architecture, Markerboards, and Automotive.

The idea of a utopian world where we could all brazenly live without screen protectors, without compromising the feel of fingertips touching actual smudge and scratch resistant glass surface is indeed fascinating. We will get there someday. For now, there is Gorilla Glass 5.

Key Features of Gorilla Glass 5

  • Survives 1.6 meter drops 80 percent of the time
  • Twice as damage resistant and 1.8 times drop resistant compared to gorilla glass 4
  • 4 times stronger than alternate glass solutions

Commenting on the launch, John Bayne, vice president, and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass, said:

With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses. With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.
