During the Google IO 2023 event, Google announced several exciting developments in terms of its hardware and software products. On the hardware side, Google unveiled the Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, and its first-ever foldable device, the Google Pixel Fold. On the software side, Google announced the release of the second iteration of the Android 14 Beta.

The Android 14 Beta 2 is now available for eligible Google Pixel devices, and the beta program has been opened up to non-Pixel devices from brands such as iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

Ultra HDR for images

The Android 14 Beta 2 brings several improvements, including support for 10-bit high dynamic range (HDR) images, which will bring in more information from the sensor and add more vibrant colors. Additionally, the update integrates Health Connect as a part of the platform, adding privacy controls into the system settings.

The predictive back gesture, which lets users preview the destination or other result of a back gesture before they fully complete it, is now part of Android 14 and no longer hidden behind developer options.

Furthermore, there are a bunch of announcements around Android 14 Beta 2 that are aimed at developers to help them get ready for the final release.

Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Tecno, Vivo, iQOO, and Xiaomi have all joined the Android 14 beta program, with expanded eligibility to several high-end devices. Xiaomi has made three of its phones and one tablet eligible for the beta program. The process for manually installing the beta release varies by device and can be complex, so it’s crucial to read the version prerequisite for each device before attempting the flashing process. In some cases, factory images are available and can be flashed via Fastboot. However, it’s important to back up personal data and follow OEM instructions carefully to avoid the risk of a hard brick.
