TL;DR
  • Samsung and Google have previewed their first Smart Glasses co-designed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to prioritize style over sci-fi aesthetics.
  • The glasses run Android XR with Gemini AI for hands-free navigation, live voice-matched translation, and contextual notifications.
  • The first collections drop this fall, marking the platform’s true expansion from bulky headsets into lightweight, everyday wearables.

At Google I/O, Samsung and Google introduced a preview of their first ‘Intelligent Eyewear.’ Unlike previous attempts, these devices are designed to look and feel like standard glasses, addressing a key barrier to mainstream adoption.

This collaboration brings together expertise in both technology and eyewear design. By involving Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, Samsung and Google are prioritizing aesthetics alongside functionality, aiming to deliver AI-enabled glasses that integrate seamlessly into daily life.

Finally, Gemini in a Frame That Makes Sense

Historically, smart glasses have struggled to find a clear use case and have raised privacy concerns. Samsung and Google are approaching this new generation with a focus on practical utility and user trust.

These glasses function as companion devices for smartphones, integrating Google’s Gemini AI into a hands-free, heads-up display. Demonstrations highlighted practical features such as turn-by-turn navigation, summarized notifications, and contextual suggestions based on location.

Live translation is a notable feature, building on previous demonstrations by Google. The system aims to translate audio while preserving the original speaker’s tone and voice, which, if reliable in real-world conditions, could significantly enhance communication for users.

The Android XR Universe Expands

Android XR was initially introduced in late 2024, primarily through Samsung’s Project Moohan headset, which targeted immersive experiences rather than everyday use. The new glasses represent a shift toward lightweight, all-day wearables. With other companies like XREAL announcing similar plans, the Samsung-Google-Warby Parker collaboration is positioned to deliver the first eyewear-style Android XR devices to market.

Warby Parker and Gentle Monster have launched dedicated landing pages for ‘Intelligent Eyewear,’ allowing interested users to register for updates. This indicates that the project is moving beyond concept and into the product development phase.

Samsung has announced plans for deep integration with the Galaxy ecosystem, enabling features such as photo capture and calendar management directly from the glasses.

No Specs Yet, Just Vibes

At this stage, Samsung and Google have not disclosed hardware specifications or sensor details. The current focus is on software capabilities and design. Historically, the main challenge for smart glasses has been social acceptance rather than technical limitations. By prioritizing familiar design and practical utility, this approach may help drive broader adoption.

The first collections are expected to be available in the fall.
