TL; DR
- From October 9, free Gemini users are limited to Flash-Lite only, losing Flash and Pro.
- AI Plus subscribers also lose Pro access, with individual email notifications about the timing.
- AI Pro gains Deep Think, previously exclusive to the pricier AI Ultra plan.
I’ve seen plenty of AI companies tighten their chatbots’ free tiers before. Whether it’s the one that started it all, ChatGPT, or the one that arrived late but made a name for itself, Claude, both have done this at some point. However, Google is doing it for both free and paid users via the same announcement, and that second part stings a bit.

What’s Changing And When?
Starting October 9, 2026, anyone without a Google AI subscription gets locked to Flash-Lite, the smallest model in Gemini’s lineup. Flash and Pro will both disappear from the list of available models. AI Plus subscribers aren’t getting cut off immediately.
However, the company will set a cutoff date and email them about when the change hits their account. Don’t be surprised if your Pro access vanishes a few weeks after everyone else’s.

The Part That Google Wants You To Focus On
Here’s the interesting bit. AI Pro subscribers are gaining Deep Think. Previously, only AI Ultra users had access to this feature. It uses parallel reasoning to help you brainstorm ideas with deeper and more critical analysis.
Google is also reportedly testing Low, Medium, and High effort settings (Anthropic’s Claude already has them) across models. The effort settings basically let you dial up how hard Gemini thinks about a question. The harder it thinks, the faster your query burns through your allotted usage credits. This builds on the compute-based limit system Google introduced back in May.

Why Is Google Doing This Now?
I’d say this exercise does two things. First, it reduces the burden on Google’s Flash and Pro AI models. They are basically available everywhere: from Gemini’s dedicated web app and smartphone app to the Gemini sidebar. I’ve been using it for a long time to get more context on a development, discuss the future implications of something, or get more information than a news post provides.
Given that Google has offered its AI Plus and AI Pro tiers for free to Indian users as part of various promotions, the downgrade could be targeting them as well. Second, the reshuffle positions Google’s AI Pro tier as the better value. My honest advice if you’re on AI Plus: finish anything demanding you’ve been running on Pro before the email lands.

Google isn’t saying whether your existing conversations will quietly downgrade or just stop working the way you’re used to.
