Google Pixel 5 goes official

Google unveiled a gush of products at its big hardware event. The star of the show is of course — Pixel 5. Although, not a top-tier spec monster, the phone does assure dependable performance thanks to the Snapdragon 765G lying inside.

The virtual event also brought out the 5G variant of Pixel 4a, a new Chromecast with Google TV OS, and Nest Audio smart speakers. We already knew more than a fair share about these Google goodies. And the actual announcements did fall right in place.

So, here you go, we have amassed all the details —

Price and Availability

  • Chromecast w/ Google TV is releasing at $49.99 in the US and is coming to more countries by the end of the year.
  • Nest Audio will be out in 21 countries, starting October 5. In the US, it is priced at $99.
  • Pixel 4a 5G comes at a starting price of $499 in the US.
  • Pixel 5 (also 5G) goes for sale at $699 in the US. It will hit the stores on Oct 15.
  • To entice new buyers, Google is offering 3 months of Stadia Pro, YouTube Premium, 100GB of Google One storage with the purchase of both new Pixels.

Chromecast with Google TV

The new oblong-shaped Chromecast comes with a dedicated remote and the revamped Google TV OS.

Google TV offers a new UI experience, wherein content from different streaming services are collated and categorized, somewhat like Netflix recommendations. There are individual screens for movies, shows, and a “For You” section (which is an algorithm based mix of both). There is also a “Trending on Google” ribbon, which lets you know what’s hot, Watchlist option which showcases stuff you’ve added to Watch Later on Google search. If you want, you can simply run the Google Photo library in Ambient Mode, much like a screensaver.

You can still cast content from other devices on to the Chromecast.

Coming to the remote, there are custom buttons for Netflix, Youtube, and Google Assistant, besides the volume, navigation, and power controls. You can still use your voice to manage the Chromecast along with other smart gadgets lying around or simply for Googling something.

Other perks include 4K HDR, multi-user profiles, and support for Bluetooth headphones.

Nest Audio smart speakers

The new smart speakers look like pillows with the fabric finish and calming colors.

Nest audio claims 50% more bass and 75% louder with an improved 19mm tweeter and 75mm woofer. You can touch the top-left and top-right edges to control volume up and down respectively, while the center portion is where you touch to play/pause the audio. To mute it, there is a giant button by the back.

The visual differences to its predecessor are conspicuous. The wide notch is replaced for a tiny left corner hole. As expected, the infamous Soli radar and prolific Face Unlock system are gone for good. Instead, we have the rear fingerprint reader.

The display is a 6-inch OLED panel with FHD+ resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 432 PPI pixel density, 90Hz refresh rate, and support for HDR 10+ color format. It comes with Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

Coming back to the cameras, you’ve got a 12.2MP Sony IMX 363 sensor and a 16MP ultrawide snapper. The phone offers up to 4K60fps video recording. The front camera is an 8MP snapper.

On the software side, there is the remarkable Night Sight (also in portrait mode), new video stabilization modes, cinematic pan video mode, Astrophotography, Portrait Light, Smart HDR, HDR+ real-time dual exposure controls, and more.

As for the software in general, the phone sports Android 11 along with some Pixel-specific features like Extreme battery saver mode that can extend the battery life up to 48 hours, and Hold For Me, which makes the Assistant listen to the hold-on music and notify you when the other person is back on call.

Internally, Pixel 5 is relying on a Snapdragon 765G chipset, coupled with 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. It also holds a huge 4080mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.
