TL; DR
  • Google has confirmed Android 17 Beta 1 is coming “soon,” right after releasing Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1.
  • Google is skipping the usual Developer Preview phase and moving straight to Beta 1 (internally tagged “26Q2”).
  • If Android 17 Beta installs on your Pixel, you can’t leave the beta program without wiping your phone until the cycle ends around June 2026.

Google has officially confirmed that Android 17 Beta 1 is on the way, and the company says it’s coming “soon.” Google shared this right after pushing Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1, which makes it clear the next major Android version is about to enter its public testing phase.

This year, Google is changing the flow. The company is skipping the traditional Developer Preview stage for Android 17 and jumping straight into Beta 1. Reports say Google is doing this because Android Canary now handles the earliest experimental changes, while beta becomes the main public testing track. The first Android 17 beta build also carries an internal label, “26Q2.”

If you already run Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 through the Android Beta Program, Google will push Android 17 Beta 1 to your phone automatically. You do not need to manually sign up again.

Once Android 17 Beta installs, you cannot opt out without wiping your phone until the end of the Android 17 beta cycle, which is expected around June 2026. If you want to avoid Android 17 beta testing entirely, you need to opt out right now using Google’s official Android Beta site, ignore the downgrade OTA, and wait for the stable Android 16 QPR3 release, which should arrive as the March Pixel update.

Google still hasn’t confirmed any Android 17 features. Leaks mention the codename “Cinnamon Bun,” and the beta timeline suggests Google aims for a stable Android 17 release around June 2026 after several months of public testing.

Some early expectations include performance work, more Material 3 Expressive refinements, and deeper on-device AI changes, but nothing is confirmed yet.
