What is CameraX?

You may be aware or at least heard of Camera2 API which is required to use Google’s proprietary Camera software. It lets the developers control the shutter speed(ISO), focus, RAW capture, etc. and cook various features into their camera apps. The all-new CameraX goes one step further. It is also a Jetpack support library like the Camera2 API.

Currently, it is available in the alpha stage for the developers to test and tinker. Another developer friendly element is its backward compatibility up to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The amount of work would reduce as now the devs might fix concord between their app and devices using a few lines of codes. Till now, the same used to take several lines consuming time and resources. The developers had to tailor the codes and come up with complex algorithms depending on various camera components such as sensors, lens, IPUs, etc.

CameraX: Uses

If you’ve used Google Camera port or the native app with the Pixel phones, you know how awesome it is! Well, you could expect the awesome to transcend over to third-party apps too as the developers gain more control, thanks to CameraX.

They could tap the features such as a portrait mode, HDR, night mode, beauty mode, etc present on the native camera. CameraX could also bridge the gap between AI and apps. The neural engines or machine learning chips within the newer devices enhance the imaging process.

Picture this- your favorite image sharing apps like Snapchat and Instagram could use the built-in Portrait, HDR, Night mode, etc to improve your social photo-sharing game.

Furthermore, if any third-party app has a unique cutting edge feature, that could now be pushed to more phones.
