TL; DR
  • Petrol and diesel prices rose by up to 96 paise per litre across four major cities.
  • This is India’s second fuel price hike within five days, driven by the US-Iran war.
  • Oil companies are still losing approximately ₹750 crore daily despite both revisions.

Driving by a fuel station just got more expensive, again. Petrol and diesel prices across India’s four major metro cities were hiked again today, with per-litre price climbing by roughly 82 to 96 paise, depending on the city you’re in.

This comes just days after a much steeper revision took place on May 15, 2026, when the prices shot up by ₹3 per liter, following the rising pressure from rising global crude costs.

Didn’t A Price Hike In Price Take Place Already?

The government-run oil companies are in a tough position. Despite the revision in petrol and diesel prices last week, the losses have only been reduced by a quarter. Earlier, the companies were operating on a daily loss of about ₹1,000 crores, and according to the Ministry of Petroleum, the number has only come down to ₹750 crores.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has separately confirmed there is no fuel shortage at pumps; however, cases of fuel pumps rationing the supply and limiting it by liters or Rupees at several locations are surfacing on the internet. To tackle the situation, India has also widened its crude oil sourcing from 27 countries to 41 countries.
