Facebook and Reliance Jio Come together for a WeChat-like ‘Super App’: Report

Facebook and Reliance Jio are allegedly developing a multipurpose app that lets users engage with essential services under one banner. The app will be similar to the Chinese WeChat app and will offer chatting, online shopping, movie-travel booking, digital payments, gaming, social media, and other services.

The two organizations are big names in their domains and thus might actually have a shot at making a comprehensive messaging platform. As reported by Economic Times, Facebook will use the WhatsApp platform user base and Reliance Jio will go will leverage its subscriber base. To be specific, the app will enable consumers to shop for clothing from ajio.com, buy groceries from Reliance Retail store, while JioMoney will handle the payments.

The new super-app will enable Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance to provide B2C involvements and data mine the spending habits of Indian consumers. To make the deal feasible, top experts and legal consultants have been hired along with Morgan Stanley, the investment banking company.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the businesses around the globe and this ambitious project falls in the trap as well. At the moment, the discussions between Facebook and Reliance Jio are on a stand-still due to global lockdown. It is yet not clear if they will launch the app as a new venture or not. Officials from both companies have refused to release a statement.
