Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Spreadtrum demonstrated their upcoming Dual SIM Dual VoLTE smartphone at India Mobile Congress. The dual SIM dual VoLTE will allow you to keep HD Calls active on both SIM cards thus enhancing your calling experience while liberating you to choose to run data or call on both 4G VoLTE enabled and regular carrier SIM card.
Why do you need Dual SIM Dual VoLTE?
As many of you must have noticed, If you have two SIM card on your phone (Jio + Non-Jio) and when you run 4G LTE on the non-Jio SIM card, the network on the Jio SIM vanishes. That’s because Jio only works with 4G LTE networks and your phone can connect only one SIM to 4G LTE at a time.
The next generation chipsets will, however, resolve this issue.
At the end of the day, Dual SIM Dual VoLTE support shall result in better call quality (HD or Ultra HD) on both SIM cards simultaneously. And you will have the option to be able to use Data on a non-JIO SIM card without giving up on Jio’s free calling privileges.

Is there any phone that comes with dual SIM dual VoLTE in India?
As of today, there is no phone that supports VoLTE on both SIM cards simultaneously. You can run VoLTE on either SIM 1 and SIM 2, but only on one slot at a time.
Qualcomm had a couple of functional prototypes to demonstrate the technology by making HD calls using both SIM cards without any need for switching LTE networks. In India, Qualcomm is already testing it with Jio and Airtel VoLTE SIM cards.

Will Dual SIM Dual VoLTE have an impact on battery backup?
When asked about the implications on battery backup by keeping two SIM cards on LTE network, Qualcomm representative assured us that this new technology won’t come with any noticeable battery penalty. The SIM cards will be in dual Standby mode (not dual active).

Can Dual SIM dual VoLTE be added to existing phones with firmware or OTA update?
The dual VoLTE support, however, cannot be added to your phone via OTA update. You will need to buy a new phone altogether.
Which chipsets support dual SIM dual VoLTE?
In recent times almost all chipset makers have come up with a new army of SoC and now most of them support dual sim dual VoLTE. Here’s a list of mobile platforms that support DSDV:
- Qualcomm: Snapdragon 450, Snapdragon 636, Snapdragon 660, Snapdragon 670, Snapdragon 675, Snapdragon 710, Snapdragon 845, Snapdragon 855
- MediaTek: MT6737, MT6739, Helio P22, Helio P23, Helio A22, Helio P60, Helio P70
- Huawei Kirin: Kirin 710, Kirin 970, Kirin 980
- Samsung Exynos: Exynos 9810, 9820
It must be noted that DSDV supported chipsets don’t guarantee support on phones employing them. OEMs may choose to disable the option. All new SoCs launched in 2019 and later half of 2018 have DSDV support.
