Dreame X40 Ultra Review: Unboxing

The box of Dreame X40 Ultra bundles a large docking station, cleaning solution, side brush, two debris removal tools, two mop pads, a power cord, and the vacuum unit itself. There are some documents inside the box, too.

Dreame X40 Ultra Review: Design, Build & Initial Setup

The design of the robotic vacuum cleaner is worth discussing first. This device features a circular form with a raised section on top that accommodates the laser navigation system. It is equipped with an LED light, a camera indicator, an AI-driven infrared camera, an AI high-definition camera, a laser distance sensor, and dual 3D line sensors. The base station is designed with separate compartments for clean and dirty mop water, and the top lid provides convenient access to the internal bin.

Additionally, the vacuum has three power buttons located on the top: Spot Cleaning, Power, and Dock. These buttons allow users to manage essential functions of the device without relying on the app. However, to unlock the full range of features, downloading the app is necessary.

The base station stands at two feet in height and measures 13 inches in width, taking up considerable space in your home or office. Both the vacuum and the base station are constructed with durability in mind, reflecting the investment of over a lakh for the robot. It is offered in two color options: black and white.

Dreame X40 Ultra Review: Companion App

To set up the device, you need to download the Dreamehome app, which is available for free on both Android and iOS platforms. After installing the app, you will need to scan a QR code located on the robot to connect it to your WiFi network. Once this step is completed, the app will provide step-by-step instructions to assist you with the installation and startup process. The app also offers a range of functions that you can utilize.

The installation of the ramp is necessary before the base station can be connected and charged. After the robot is charged and begins its cleaning cycle, it will generate a virtual map of your entire floor effortlessly. This map will adjust with each movement, updating based on the arrangement of furniture, laundry bags, and slippers. It offers both 2D and 3D map styles, along with a new curtain zone feature that enables cleaning beneath curtains without the risk of the robot getting entangled.

Through the app, you can modify the map according to room divisions, establish go zones, set virtual walls, and more. The mapping process exhibited minimal errors, and the navigational accuracy was commendable, largely due to the 3D structured LED technology.

The application generally performs effectively during both setup and regular use. However, it requires some refinement, as the interface appears somewhat dated. Frequently accessed settings are buried several layers deep within the app, and the camera experiences occasional lag. Additionally, the organization of the cleaning modes could be improved. Dreame should focus on enhancing the app’s user-friendliness and intuitiveness.

Dreame X40 Ultra Review: Cleaning & Performance

The Dreame X40 Ultra features an impressive suction power of 12,000Pa, setting a high standard for robot vacuums. This device offers a range of customizable settings for both vacuuming and mopping. Users can select options for deep carpet cleaning and utilize AI-guided cleaning, allowing for the programming of carpet cleaning before floor cleaning. Additionally, the vacuum is capable of simultaneously sweeping and mopping for more efficient cleaning.

It provides multiple suction settings, including quiet, standard, turbo, and max, enabling users to choose the most appropriate level for their needs. In our experience, we primarily utilized the standard and turbo modes, reserving the maximum setting for particularly dirty conditions following rainy weather. Furthermore, the CleanGenius mode allows the robot vacuum to automatically adjust its cleaning parameters based on the level of mess in the area.

Maneuverability is outstanding, allowing it to navigate obstacles up to 22mm effortlessly, making it capable of crossing thresholds with ease. It can intelligently avoid minor impediments such as small cables or socks, ensuring effective cleaning performance.

The cleaning modes offer various options such as vacuum only, mop only, vacuum and mop, mop after vacuum, and customized room cleaning. This flexibility allows you to select specific days for either vacuuming or mopping. Additionally, you can schedule mopping to occur after vacuuming, which is considered the standard cleaning method and is often the most effective. Users can also establish tailored suction and mopping settings for each area of their home. Furthermore, the vacuum is compatible with Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa, enabling voice-activated operation. When mopping, you can choose from different wetness levels, including slightly dry, moist, and wet.

When discussing mopping configurations, the frequency can be adjusted based on the area, time, and specific rooms. The designated area can range from 10 to 35 square meters, and the robot will automatically return to clean the mop pad after completing the specified area. If you opt for a time-based setting, the robot will return to refresh the mop pad according to a schedule that can be set between 10 and 50 minutes. Additionally, you can establish zones that allow the robot to return to its base station after cleaning an individual room or designated area. The cleaning paths can be selected from standard, intensive, or deep options for both vacuuming and mopping tasks.

Let us examine some of the key features that prove to be quite beneficial. One notable aspect is the extendable and liftable side brush, which adeptly moves up and down by over 10mm, allowing it to clean edges and reach under lower furniture. Throughout our testing period, the side brush demonstrated commendable performance. Another distinctive feature is the magnetic pads, which remain at the base station while the robot vacuums carpets, preventing any risk of rugs becoming damp from the mop heads. After completing the rug cleaning, the robot returns to the station to reattach these mop pads before proceeding to mop the designated area. The high-precision sensors guarantee that the mops are rewashed as necessary.

MopExtend RoboSwing technology elevates mop heads by up to 10.55mm, effectively safeguarding carpets from moisture. This feature allows the mop head to rotate and clean in tight spaces, such as around chair legs, sofa corners, and kitchen cabinets. Dreame incorporates AI to recognize objects, enabling users to monitor their pets through the camera feed, even when they are in different rooms. The vacuum performs admirably in collecting human hair, lint, pet dander, and other debris. However, some longer hair strands may become entangled in the brush, necessitating manual removal. In households with a higher prevalence of long hair, such as mine with three women, this task of detangling the main brush must be done weekly, which can be somewhat frustrating.

Dreame is offering a TriCut brush for sale separately, designed to effectively cut through hair and prevent tangles or clogs. Although it comes with a higher price point, there remains a single roller rubber brush available.

The base station is equipped with a substantial 300ml dust bag, which has a lifespan of approximately 75 days per use. After two weeks of operation, the bag was less than half full, indicating that it is likely to last beyond 60 days. The actual duration may vary based on the amount of dust present and the size of the home. Additionally, the base station effectively empties the bin following each cleaning cycle.

The mopping tank features an 80ml onboard water capacity. The containers for clean and dirty water are quite spacious, which means that the clean water may need to be replenished every few days. I prefer to empty the dirty water container after each use to prevent any unpleasant odors, although it can be left for extended periods if desired. On one occasion, I neglected to empty it for 3-4 cycles and found that it was not even half full after that time. The robot is capable of detecting dirt and wet messes, giving them priority during cleaning.

The Dreame X40 Ultra operates quietly on its lowest setting, but the noise level increases significantly when the suction power is ramped up. The loudest operation occurs during its self-cleaning cycle, which may disturb sleeping toddlers at home. While the vacuuming noise is generally manageable for adults, allowing them to sleep, activating the Do Not Disturb feature will prevent the robot from auto-emptying during designated times. Typically, it conducts self-cleaning both before and after its cleaning sessions and intelligently assesses whether the brushes require cleaning during mopping tasks.

Dreame X40 Ultra review: Battery & Other Features

The Dreame X40 Ultra is equipped with a robust 6400mAh battery, providing an exceptional runtime. In standard mode, it effectively vacuumed and mopped an area of approximately 1200 square feet in about 50 minutes, retaining 88% of its battery life. The area covered per charge varies based on the size of your home and the cleaning settings selected. When operating in turbo mode, the device consumes more power, and after cleaning a similar 1200 square feet, the remaining battery was around 76%.

Dreame X40 Ultra review: Maintenance

The Dreame X0 Ultra base station is equipped with a range of automated features, including self-emptying, self-cleaning, self-drying, self-refilling, and self-dispensing, all of which require no user intervention. It boasts a larger 80ml water tank and a 300ml dust bag, eliminating the need for frequent emptying after each cleaning session. The automatic dispensing of cleaning solutions allows for weeks of hands-free cleaning. Once the clean water tank is filled and the included cleaning solution is added, the device is ready for multiple cleaning cycles.

After each cleaning session, the mop is automatically washed with hot water and dried with hot air to remove any odors. This entire process occurs independently unless the Do Not Disturb mode is activated.

For areas requiring the cleaning of both carpets and hard floors, the Dreame X40 Ultra serves as a solid choice for a robot vacuum. When operating this device, you can rest assured that a soiled mop pad will not dampen your rugs, as it avoids contact with carpets or soft surfaces during cleaning. However, this convenience comes at a significant cost, which may be a financial strain for the average consumer. For households that exclusively need carpet cleaning, there are numerous budget-friendly vacuum options available.

The Dreame X40 Ultra robot delivers exceptional performance, featuring advanced cleaning technology and an impressive battery life. Its app support allows for efficient home mapping, while the liftable side brush facilitates cleaning in difficult-to-reach areas. However, it does have some drawbacks, including an outdated app interface, the need for an additional dust bag, the high expense of cleaning solutions, and the manual removal of long hair from the brush. Nonetheless, it is important to note that every smart appliance comes with its own set of challenges.

The base station is quite sizable and occupies a significant amount of space in your residence. Individuals with ample room and the financial means to invest in this cleaning device may find it to be a worthwhile option. It is particularly well-suited for households with pets and for those who prioritize cleanliness. Currently, Dreame provides a device that stands unmatched in the market. However, if budget limitations are a concern, more economical alternatives are available from brands like Xiaomi and Ecovacs.
