Continuing its focus on emerging markets, Google today introduced a dedicated data saving app, Datally. The app monitors your usage stats, understands your individual data consumption pattern and gives personalized recommendations for how you can save more.

Google says that their initial testing results in the Philippines show that the app can help people save up to 30 percent of their data.

Datally Features: 4 Things you can do.

Datally is a simple app and, on the home screen, the interface has only one toggle that you can use to turn data saver on or off. It works for both when you are on WiFi and on Data connection.

Manage Data

From manage data, you can see data usage stats and also block or unblock data access for individual apps by taping the lock/unlock icon. The app also gives a personalized recommendation for data saving based on your individual behavior.

Data bubble

Datally also has a floating bubble that can show the data consumed by the app you are currently using. You can also tap the bubble to block app data.

If you find the bubble annoying, you can always turn it off from app settings.

Locate public WiFi

The app can also notify you whenever you are in the range of a public WiFi. This should obviously help save some data.

Stop sharing your data with Google

Datally has the option to share your usage stats (‘Help improve Datally’) with Google turned on by default. The collected information is used for improving the app. If you wish to opt out, just turn off the toggle in the settings.

Talking about the new app, Caesar Sengupta, Vice President, Next Billion Users, Google, in a blog post said, “Mobile data is expensive for many people around the world. And what’s worse, it’s hard to figure out where it all goes. That’s why we built Datally, an app that helps you to control, save more and do more with your data. We’ve been testing Datally in the Philippines for the past few months, and people are saving up to 30 percent on their data.”

Do you really need a data saving app like Datally?

A dedicated data sharing app is certainly something many Indian users will find helpful. We for one can comfortably make through our day with 1GB/day limit that most Telecomms are now offering (all thanks to Reliance Jio), but if your consumption is higher, or if you want to pinpoint the rouge app sipping through your data, Datally can come in handy.
