What Is Glacier Battery?

OnePlus 11R battery and charging speed

According to a Weibo post from OnePlus (translated into English), Glacier Battery is a marketing term for a high-performance battery that provides a “breakthrough battery life experience.” While that doesn’t give us a clear idea, it explains that the company has developed a new smartphone battery technology that will provide a better battery life than traditional lithium-ion batteries used by smartphone manufacturers.

What Problems Does The Glacier Battery Solve?

In a subsequent post, the company talks about solving three particular battery-related problems. First, it mentions how the Glacier Battery will eliminate frequent charging, which is true for almost every smartphone in 2024. Be it the flagships of leaders like Samsung or Apple or the mid-rangers of companies like Moto and Redmi; smartphone batteries don’t hold up well under heavy usage, so users have to charge their phones frequently.

Second, the brand talks about the anxiety of running out of power and, consequently, about the burden of carrying large and heavy power banks. Last but not least, it talks about “super capacity” in another post, revealing that it has partnered with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL), one of the largest battery tech companies. Finally, it mentions the date of the grand reveal, June 20, 2024.

Here’s What A Reliable Chinese Tipster Reveals About The Glacier Battery

Digital Chat Station leak about Glacier Battery

Clearly, the brand hasn’t divulged much information about its Glacier Battery technology, but the reliable Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station has shared some important information about it. According to DCS, the Glacier Battery tech features a new silicon-carbon negative electrode, along with a new battery cell process. “The advanced structural design directly leads to a reduction in volume,” implying that the technology consists of energy-dense batteries.

  • OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will be the first smartphone to use the company’s Glacier Battery technology, with a 6,100 mAh physical cell.
  • The phone will also feature 100W fast charging.
  • Many upcoming OnePlus models will use Glacier Batteries.

Traditional Batteries Vs. Glacier Batteries: What’s Different?

According to the Chinese tipster, Glacier Battery tech uses a silicon-carbon negative electrode, which can store more energy per unit mass than traditional lithium-ion batteries that use graphite. Further, the upgraded battery cell process could refer to the improvements in manufacturing techniques for optimizing the battery’s internal structure.

The advanced structural design could be referring to a new way of placing the battery component inside the smartphone. This could help the brand equip the phone with a larger battery without increasing the overall thickness. However, that is the extent of information that we have and can possibly infer from the leak.

Moreover, we’re talking about a battery that packs in more charging capacity and can retain its peak charging capacity for longer. However, it’s also known that smartphones with 6,000 mAh will naturally perform better than others. Hence, what remains to be seen is how better a Glacier Battery does, not just with respect to regular batteries, but also how a regular battery of the same size would do.
