The 7th edition of the annual Indian Mobile Congress 2023 was held from 27th to 29th October. The event attracted many participants and visitors who were tech enthusiasts and had a keen interest in what the future would bring forth. IMC is a mega event that showcases upcoming trends and innovations in telecom, media, and technology.
IMC 2023 saw dignitaries like Akash Ambani, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Kumar Mangalam Birla, and honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the event. It was held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi and the theme was ‘Global Digital Innovation’.
The event got over a few days ago and in case you missed out on what was announced, we are here with all the highlights.
1. PM Modi inaugurated the event
PM Narendra Modi lauded India’s 5G achievements. According to the Prime Minister India surprised the world with its 5G rollout last year and the country did not stop there but worked on making 5G available to every individual. India has developed 4 lakh 5G base stations that cover more than 97% of the population. India’s mobile broadband speed has increased three times and the country has moved from 118th position to 43rd position in terms of speed. PM Modi also added that India aims to become a leader in 6G as well.
2. Global Participation in IMC 2023
Although the Indian Mobile Congress is an Indian event, it saw global participation as well. This year, it had over 1 lakh participants from 22 countries, including 5000 CEO-level delegates, 230 exhibitors, 400 startups, and more. These attendees get a platform for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing among the global community.
3. 100 5G labs across India
One of the first big announcements was about the establishment of 100 5G labs in India to promote students, professors, startups, and MSMEs to work on 5G in fields like health, agriculture, manufacturing, education, and more. The labs will be set up in academic institutions in states like Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Telangana, Delhi, UP, and more. Some names of institutions have been announced as well including IIT Guwahati, Delhi Technological University, Jamia Hamdard University, and more.
4. Reliance Jio Glass
We have been hearing about the Jio Glass for a while now and finally, Reliance has showcased its Jio Glass in IMC 2023. It is a mixed-reality headset that can be used for immersive video conferencing, virtual meetings, education, watching videos, and gaming.
5. Reliance JioSpace Fiber
Jio had its Emergency Response Communications System on display. Reliance Jio showcased India’s first satellite-based Gigabit broadband service that can provide high-speed internet in previously inaccessible geographies. Jio also demonstrated how they are offering internet to 4 remote locations- Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa, and Jorhat Assam. There is no update about when the services will roll out.
6. Nokia showcased 6G
Tech giant Nokia unveiled its vision for the future of wireless communication, which involves using 6G to create a situational awareness that can sense and interact with the environment without compromising privacy. Its 6G network will act as a radar, detecting objects, people, and movements around corners at a distance. Nokia also showed off its smart and safe railway networks, which use a private wireless network to support advanced signaling and train control systems. It will enable faster, safer, and greener transportation for commuters in India.
7. Ericsson’s RedCap Solution
Ericsson showcased its new radio access network software solution, RedCap which aims to simplify and extend the battery life of 5G devices while delivering higher data rates and speeds. RedCap has been designed for devices such as smartwatches, wearables, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices that need low power consumption and high performance. Ericsson has partnered with Airtel and Qualcomm to showcase the capabilities of RedCap devices on the Airtel 5G network.
8. Aspire & Robo Blitz
Two new initiatives to foster entrepreneurship and skill development among young innovators and engineers have been introduced. Aspire is a start-up program that highlights the potential of emerging technologies in telecom and digital domains. Robo Blitz is a Robo Wars event that challenges participants to showcase their talents in robotics.
9. Airtel to solve Network Problems with AI
Airtel’s A-SON aka AI-powered Self Optimizing Network Solution detects anomalies and solves them with AI without any manual intervention. The solution is designed in a way to predict issues that the Airtel networks will face in the future and ensure that the team resolves them beforehand. The solution is fully designed by Airtel and was first introduced in March 2022.
Airtel also demonstrated how its Xstream AirFiber works for areas where it has no fiber or broadband connectivity. The service is available in regions like Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Noida.
10. Vi at IMC 2023
Along with showcasing live 5G experiences, Vi demonstrated various use cases including Enterprise, Consumer, and Community Development, highlighting the vast potential of technology and 5G.
These are some of the highlights of the IMC 2023. Unlike last year where 5G rollout announcement was a big draw for the event, this year there were multiple demo sessions and other key announcements.
