Summers are back and you are likely planning to buy an AC to keep your home or office space cool. Now, if you’re confused by the huge number of brands with different types, features, and specifications, this is a guide is for you.

We understand that each of us has our budget constraints and specific requirements. This list covers different air conditioners with energy efficiency ratings ranging between 3 to 5 stars and capacity up to 1.5-ton.

But, there are several things to consider before buying a new Air conditioner. Let’s go through them first to make an educated decision. Shall we?

Things to consider when buying an AC (Air Conditioner):

1. Capacity

The size of your house and room affects the AC power. As you can see in the image, the larger the size of the room, larger should be the cooling capacity of your AC. Apart from this, how much polluted the city you live in is, becomes an important criterion too.

2. Inverter Ac vs non-inverter AC

The most important thing in today’s time is that you decide whether you want a non-inverter AC or inverter AC. The inverter AC changes the fan speed and compressor capacity according to the temperature, which substantially saves power. Moreover, the motor also works art low power and with less operational noise. So, these are better than the non-inverter one when it comes to being eco-friendly, power-efficient and lasting longer.

3. Power Rating

Power rating is from BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) and denotes what power saving slab your AC belongs to. The higher the rating, the more power efficient your AC is. For instance, a 5 Star Ac will be more power efficient than a 3 Star AC and thus will result in a lower electricity bill. Contrary to a few popular myths, the rating is not an indicator of cooling capability of your AC..

4. Coolant Type

Here are the 4 different gases used in ACs:

  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC): It was the initial coolant used in AC which is also known as R12. This coolant causes damage to the ozone layer due to the lead in its composition.
  • Hydrochlorofluorocarbons  – (HCFC): Conscious of the environment, CFCs / R12 has been replaced with HCFCs, which is being used in today’s name as R22. Though the damage to ozone is relatively less, they would cease to be used in the future. (Indian Government plans to phase it out by the year 2030)
  • Hydrofluorocarbons – (HFC): Then came the HFCs and these three types of coolants: R410A, R32, and R134. These do not deplete ozone. However, they could contribute to Global Warming.
  • Hydrocarbons – (HC):  HC is available as the only coolant to reach the lowest damage to the environment in the present time. In ACs, the coolants used are R290 and R600A. Due to eco-friendly nature, they are also called green coolant.

5. Other features

Apart from this, you could also look for the following nifty features:

  • Cool mode
  • fan mode
  • Energy power saver mode
  • Quick Cool Mode
  • sleep mode
  • 6th Sense Cooling

Now, that’s enough knowledge to get you started. Let’s proceed to the list of best available options.
