Apple has been planning to replace the physical buttons on its upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models with solid-state buttons equipped with haptic feedback. However, technical issues have reportedly forced Apple to abandon its plans. According to renowned Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, both devices are expected to stick to the current physical button design seen in current iPhones.
Kuo revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro is currently in the Engineering Validation Testing (EVT) phase, the earliest stage of product development before mass production can start. The Design Validation Testing (DVT) stage, where a fully designed product is tested to ensure all components work together correctly, follows this stage. There is still a possibility that Apple could change the design of the new iPhones before they reach the DVT stage, but as of now, it looks like Apple will simplify the production process by sticking to physical buttons.
Another analyst, Jeff Pu from Haitong Tech, has also backed Kuo’s report, stating that the iPhone 15 Pro might not deliver solid-state controls.
Despite this setback, analysts predict that the haptic buttons will likely appear on the iPhone 16 series. For prospective iPhone 15 buyers, it shouldn’t be a significant concern since the physical mute switch and volume keys work just fine on the current iPhones. While solid-state buttons could have added functionality, the current design still gets the job done.
Overall, it seems like Apple has hit a roadblock in its design plans for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, it’s not the end of the world as buyers can still expect a reliable and functional phone design. With Apple’s focus on producing high-quality devices, it will be interesting to see what changes the company makes before the devices reach mass production.
