Apple has officially announced its highly anticipated augmented reality headset, named Apple Vision Pro, designed to seamlessly merge the real and digital worlds. During the announcement, CEO Tim Cook described the device as the first Apple product that users look through, rather than at. Resembling a pair of ski goggles, the headset boasts a separate battery pack and offers control options through eye movements, hand gestures, and voice commands.

Positioned primarily as an augmented reality (AR) device, the Vision Pro can seamlessly transition between augmented and full virtual reality experiences using a dial. The headset is designed to be controller-free, enabling users to navigate rows of app icons by simply gazing at them. Selections can be made through taps, scrolling can be accomplished with flicks, and voice commands are also supported. Additionally, the headset supports Bluetooth accessories and allows users to connect their Mac devices to use within the headset.

Apple assures users that they will not feel isolated from their surroundings while using the Vision Pro. The headset employs a system called EyeSight, which displays the user’s eyes to those around them. When in full virtual reality mode, a glowing screen will obscure the user’s eyes, indicating that they are engaged and unavailable. Through the utilization of passthrough video technology, users can observe the real world in full color while also projecting 3D objects into their physical environment. For instance, objects can be extracted from message threads and placed into the real world. During remote conversations, users can employ spatial audio to arrange FaceTime participants as “video tiles” around the room. Furthermore, the headset includes a 3D camera for capturing and reliving immersive video experiences.

The highly anticipated augmented reality (AR) headset that combines cutting-edge technology with a stylish design. Boasting a glass front and an aluminum frame, the headset incorporates five sensors, 12 cameras, a high-resolution display, and a fan-cooled computer for optimal performance.

Designed with user comfort in mind, the headset features a cloth-lined modular mask and strap that can flexibly adjust to accommodate various face shapes and head sizes. The ribbed headband wraps around the back of the head, offering a secure and comfortable fit. Apple has ensured versatility by enabling users to interchange different sizes and styles of headbands to suit their preferences. Additionally, Zeiss has collaborated with Apple to create custom optical inserts that magnetically attach to the lenses, catering to individuals who wear glasses.

The Apple Vision Pro incorporates the M2 chip, renowned for its exceptional performance. However, Apple has introduced a new chip called the R1, which works in conjunction with the M2 to enhance the headset’s capabilities and deliver a seamless AR experience.

Apple Vision Pro has undergone extensive development over the years, reportedly undergoing numerous iterations and experiencing significant delays. The headset is expected to be a flagship addition to Apple’s product lineup, embodying CEO Tim Cook’s vision for the company. While entering a market that has yet to reach mainstream adoption, the headset has garnered praise from industry insiders. Its primary competitor is likely to be Meta, known for the success of its game-focused Quest 2 headset, although the reception to its general-purpose Quest Pro has been more mixed.

Apple’s foray into the augmented reality headset market with the Vision Pro represents a bold step toward further blurring the boundaries between the real and digital worlds. By harnessing the power of AR and VR technologies, Apple aims to deliver an immersive and interactive user experience that redefines how individuals engage with technology in their daily lives.
