Apple Sneaks Anti-Reflective Coating into Every iPhone 17 Model, Including the iPhone Air

Something that flew under the radar during Apple’s September 9, 2025 keynote – the company quietly gave every iPhone 17 model an advanced anti-reflective coating. The feature wasn’t mentioned on stage but appears in Apple’s official specifications, integrated as part of the next-generation Ceramic Shield 2. This upgrade not only boosts durability with 3X better scratch resistance but also reduces glare, improving visibility in bright conditions.

The iPhone 17 series includes the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. All models share the Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120 Hz, 3000 nits peak brightness outdoors, and now the anti-reflective coating built into Ceramic Shield 2.

Apple describes it as a multi-layer design that makes displays more resistant while cutting down mirror-like reflections, meaning easier reading and viewing in sunlight or brightly lit offices. What makes this especially significant is Apple’s choice to bring it to the entire lineup.

Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and S25, where Gorilla Glass Armor with anti-reflective tech is exclusive to the Ultra models, Apple ensures even entry-level buyers benefit. This should boost user satisfaction across the board, especially for people who rely heavily on outdoor readability.

During the keynote, Apple stuck to flashier talking points: the A19 chip’s efficiency gains, camera improvements with new computational photography, and the thinner iPhone 17 Air variant. Ceramic Shield 2 was briefly highlighted for toughness, but the anti-reflective element went unmentioned.

Only in the detailed display specs does it appear, right alongside “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating” and the new brightness levels, which are now standard across the lineup. Yes, Apple did say they’ve used a “new Apple-designed coating,” but didn’t specify what it was.

We are still waiting to see the iPhone 17 lineup live, across all models, to get a true sense of how the anti-reflective coating looks in real-world use.
