Since the very moment Apple announced WWDC 2024, there have been a lot of rumors floating around about what we could witness at the event. One prominent one is the heavy emphasis on AI. Now, according to a recent report by Bloomberg, Apple plans to integrate advanced AI capabilities into Siri, aiming to enhance its functionality and user experience.
Currently, Siri is often criticized for its vague responses and frequent reliance on web searches for answers. I’m sure you have seen the “I found this on the web” meme on Siri. But now, using a large language model (LLM), Siri should be able to perform a wide array of tasks that go beyond its current capabilities. This includes moving files, opening documents, summarizing articles on Apple News, sending emails, and executing various other commands.
And of course, Siri will continue to handle basic tasks such as controlling music, setting timers and alarms, and managing IoT devices like HomePod and Apple TV.

One of the most exciting aspects of this update could be the potential for personalized user experiences. The Bloomberg report suggests that Siri will analyze individual usage patterns to create customized control features tailored to each user.
Initially, we are expecting the personalization to be available for Apple apps only, with expansion to third-party apps in the future. It’s all dependent on the developers to leverage Siri for their apps’ functions.
There is also speculation about the specific AI technology that will be used. While there are hints that Siri might use Google Gemini, it remains unconfirmed. If true, it would mark a notable collaboration, though I have doubts whether it would surpass Google Assistant in certain aspects.

Alongside this new Siri overhaul, other AI-powered features are expected to be announced at WWDC 2024. These include AI-generated emojis (rumored previously), quick website recaps, voice memo transcriptions, automated message replies, and advanced photo editing capabilities. Apple is, obviously, a bit late to the AI party, but whether or not it was worth being late is yet to be seen.
While these features are set to roll out to all devices supporting iOS 18, it is unclear if every feature will be available on every device. Gurman says that most of the on-device AI features will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later to work, though. So, are you looking forward to these new features?
