TL;DR
- In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Craig Federighi, the head of the software division for Apple, opened up about the delay in Apple Intelligence.
- Let’s try to get each piece right and release it when it’s ready,” said Federighi to WSJ’s Joanna Stern
- Meanwhile, a few Apple Intelligence features will be available for eligible iPhone users, starting next week.
When it comes to Apple Intelligence, the Cupertino-based tech giant has two years’ worth of progress (from competitors like Samsung and Google) to catch up on. Yet somehow, the company is comfortable with a phased rollout of its GenAI features. Recently, one of the company’s top executives opened up about the delay in Apple Intelligence, stating how the company wants to get things right instead of doing them on time.

Apple Will Stick With A Phased Rollout For Apple Intelligence

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Craig Federighi, the head of the software division for Apple, opened up about the delay in Apple Intelligence. Instead of rolling out all the features at once, the company has adopted a phased-launch approach.
Simply put, none of the iPhone 16 (or iPhone 15 Pro) users will get all the Apple Intelligence features at once. Instead, all of them will experience the features one by one, giving the company enough time to refine a particular group of features and then work on the next ones.
Phased Rollout Will Give The Company More Time To Refine Each Feature
“Let’s try to get each piece right and release it when it’s ready,” said Federighi to WSJ’s Joanna Stern. The executive explained how Apple’s approach toward generative AI features differs from what’s happening in the industry. While most competitors are using cloud-based computing to process intensive features, the company’s privacy-oriented approach keeps it from moving at a faster pace.

Apple’s Private Cloud Computer Will Use Encrypted Servers To Process The Required Data

“For many companies, the answer is, ‘Send us all your data, store it with us in a way that we can reach and process it.’ But as a user, you’re not quite sure – is that all they’re going to do with it?” says Federighi. While most of the Apple Intelligence features would be processed on the iPhone, some would leverage the company’s “private cloud compute,” which uses encrypted servers to route users’ data and gets rid of it once the request is complete.
But Where Is Apple Intelligence Anyway?
Apple has just confirmed that exactly when it will roll out Apple Intelligence or “AI” features for iPhone users. It’s going to happen next week. Although the company didn’t mention a particular date, we believe that the rollout could begin on Monday, October 28, with the features being available to more users over the coming days.
