On July 23, 2024, the Indian government decided to lower the Basic Customs Duty on imported smartphones and related components, such as printed circuit boards and chargers, from 20% to 15%. As the Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the change, the smartphone industry began anticipating a price drop, especially for the flagships that cost over a lakh rupees. Our article mentioned that “even a 5% decrease in the price could save users thousands of rupees, making the phones more accessible.” And that’s exactly what has happened with Apple’s iPhones.

New iPhone Pricing Goes Live On Apple’s Website
The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has slashed the prices for its iPhone. While the regular iPhone models have received a discount of Rs. 300, the Pro models have received a discount of up to Rs. 5,900. Usually, Apple lowers the price of its Pro iPhones after the launch of the next series, but this year, the price drop can be attributed to the lower Basic Customs Duty. While the company has already updated the discounted price on its website, buyers might take advantage of some in-store offers at authorized resellers or leading retail stores.
- The iPhone 15 now costs Rs. 79,600, which is Rs. 300 less than its previous price of Rs. 79,900.
- The iPhone 15 Plus now costs Rs. 89,600, down from Rs. 89,900, accounting for a discount of Rs. 300.
- The iPhone 15 Pro is now listed for Rs. 1,29,800, down from the original price of Rs. 1,34,900, which accounts for a discount of Rs. 5,100.
- On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is listed for Rs. 1,54,000, down from the initial price of Rs. 1,59,900. This model has received the highest price cut of Rs. 5,900.

Older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus, have also received a price cut of Rs. 300. Now, they cost Rs. 69,600 and Rs. 79,600, respectively. For those wondering about the iPhone 13 and the iPhone SE (2022), the phones now cost Rs. 59,600 and Rs. 47,600, which is Rs. 300 less than the previous pricing. Clearly, the iPhone 15 Pro models are the ones to get the best of the cut in Basic Customs Duty.

Apple To Manufacture iPhone 16 Pro And iPhone 16 Pro Models In India
In a related development, Apple’s supplier, Foxconn, is gearing up to manufacture iPads in India. The contract manufacturer is prepping the Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The information surfaces via a report by the Economic Times. So far, Apple has only made its iPhones in India, barring the Pro models, leading to a retail price cut. However, as and when Foxconn starts making iPads in India, consumers can expect to see a price drop.
This is an attempt to diversify the supply chain outside China, especially during the geopolitical tensions. Another report by Moneycontrol suggests that Apple could start making the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models in India, which could further push the manufacturing industry in the country and, in due course, result in decreased prices.
