In Samsung’s smartphone portfolio, the Galaxy J5 and J7 stand out from the rest and for all good reasons. Samsung branding is very valuable to buyers across all price ranges and thus Samsung never made a real effort to deliver on high specs to price ratio devices the market is flooded with today, thanks to Chinese and local manufacturers.
Samsung budge phones have rarely been impressive in the last few years, but with Galaxy J5, Samsung delivers. The design isn’t particularly impressive. The bulky chrome finished side edges are doing it any favor either. On the rear side, you will find a soft touch plastic back cover which lends a nice grip to Galaxy J5.
Primary attraction on the front side is the AMOLED panel, which is actually quite good, in-spite of budget constraints and is lined by hard home and soft navigation keys. Under the hood, the Snapdragon 410 with well optimized Android 5.1 Lollipop based software makes it a decent performer. It is much better than what we are used to getting from Samsung phones in this budget.
The rear 13MP camera and the front 5MP selfie shooter perform well in adequate lighting, however, the performance is nothing special in low light situations. The front camera is aided with an LED torch light, which can make a difference in certain situations. A pro mode with limited toggles has also been included in the camera app.
The battery backup is pretty impressive. The handset easily made it across one day mark even with fairly heavy usage. Battery drain under standby is also very low.
Of course the competition has better spec-sheets lined up, but again if you value Samsung branding and are on a budget, this is the best phone to go for. If you are willing to spend a little extra, the Galaxy J7 is also an option.
