Nothing Phone (4a) Pro Review: Growing up Hard to do

#ExpertReview
By Smartprix4 months ago
When Nothing first hit the scene, it survived entirely on its transparent backs and flashing Glyph lights. It was the quirky alternative to a sea of boring glass slabs. But being the quirky alternative only gets you so far. With the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, priced at Rs. 39,999, the company is finally trying to prove it can compete on pure hardware. Switching from plastic to a solid aluminum body and adding a capable Sony periscope camera, the Phone (4a) Pro feels like Nothing’s most refined phone so far. In this price range, there are strong options like the vivo V70 and POCO X8 Pro, so the 4a Pro has to stand on its own strengths. After using it as my main phone for two weeks, I found it has a certain charm, though there are a few compromises you will notice in daily use.
  • Glyph Matrix is useful
  • Nothing OS is fun and unique
  • Excellent 3.5x zoom
  • Premium metal build
  • Weak 8MP ultrawide
  • 1080p selfie video

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro come with a charger inside the box?

No, you will not find a charging adapter included in the retail box. Nothing only bundles a Type-C cable, a custom protective phone case, a SIM ejector tool, and a pre-applied screen protector. You will need to use an existing charging adapter or buy a new one that supports up to 50W charging speeds.

How long does the battery last on the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and does it support wireless charging?

The 5400 mAh battery easily powers the phone through a full day of heavy use, leaving you with plenty of juice for the next morning. While it features speedy 50W wired charging and handy 7.5W reverse wired charging, it completely misses out on wireless charging because of its metal back panel.

What are the camera features of the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and how is the image quality?

You get a powerful triple-camera system on the back consisting of a 50MP main shooter with optical image stabilization, a 50MP periscope lens with 3.5x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. Selfies are handled by a clean 32MP front camera. It takes incredibly sharp daytime photos, though the automated night-time processing can sometimes look a bit too aggressive.

How good is the display on the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro for outdoor use?

The phone rocks a gorgeous 6.83-inch 1.5K flexible AMOLED panel that supports a fluid 144Hz adaptive refresh rate. Thanks to a peak brightness of 5000 nits, you will have no trouble whatsoever reading text or viewing media outdoors under direct, harsh sunlight.

What processor is inside the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and can it handle heavy gaming?

It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset, which makes regular multitasking and scrolling through social apps feel butter-smooth. The aluminum body does an exceptional job of keeping the phone cool during extended use. That said, hardcore mobile gamers might want to look at alternative performance flagships if maximizing competitive frame rates is the top priority.

How many software updates will the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro get in India?

The device launches with Nothing OS 4.1, which is built on Android 16. Nothing officially promises to deliver 3 years of major Android version upgrades alongside 6 years of regular security patches to keep your device safe and up to date.

Is the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro waterproof or dust resistant?

It features an official IP65 dust and water resistance rating. This gives it enough protection to survive unexpected liquid splashes or a quick run through the monsoon rain, but it is not built to be submerged in a pool.

How does the design of the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro compare to older models?

Instead of the transparent glass backs seen on earlier generations, this phone shifts to a premium and durable 100% recycled aluminum unibody design. However, it keeps the brand's signature lighting system intact via an updated Glyph Matrix interface on the rear that uses 137 individual mini-LEDs.

What does the dedicated AI button on the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro actually do?

The physical Essential Key on the left side acts as a direct shortcut to the phone's built-in AI productivity tools. Giving it a single tap lets you take an intelligent screenshot where you can quickly add text notes, while holding the button down lets you instantly record voice memos directly into your localized Essential Space.
