Nokia Lumia 800 review: New beginnings

There's a lot riding on the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Finns put a lot of work into it - well, they worked for a long time anyway. The final result manages to impress, but also brings some disappointment.

The camera has plenty of potential too - as it is, it's one of the best shooters in the Windows Phone world and has the potential to get even better with a software update that clears up some of its issues (like the overly eager continuous autofocus).read more →
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Quad-band 3G with 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA support
  • 3.7" 16M-color AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of 480 x 800 pixel resolution
  • Scratch resistant Gorilla glass display with anti-glare polarizer
  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash, 720p@27fps video recording and fast f/2.2 lens
  • Windows Phone 7.5 OS (Mango)
  • Display is much dimmer than the N9's display
  • No Flash or Silverlight support in browser
  • No USB mass storage (file management and sync pass only through Zune)
  • No video calls and no front-facing camera either
  • Non-user-replaceable battery
  • No memory card slot (and no 64GB version like the N9)

  • Brings out the best of Windows Phone
  • AMOLED screen is great for general use
  • Tethering and other advanced features are missing
  • Phones on other platforms have better cameras and performance

Have the battery life issues finally been rectified?

Although we had our doubts during initial familiarisation with the Nokia WP7 environment, the transition from the Symbian environment will be much less painful than expected for those still entranced by the Nokia brand.

In less than 48 hours we went from wanting to return to our old phones to not wanting to let go of this one. After four months with the Nokia Lumia 800 we still don't want to let it go, although we have had to accept some of its negatives to make the most of its positives.read more →
  • Quality design
  • Clever interface
  • Speedy browser
  • Intuitive contact linking
  • Xbox integration
  • Internet text display dodgy at times
  • No Flash video
  • Zune player takes ages to copy video across
  • Video recording not impressive
  • Battery issues still prevail

Nokia Lumia 800 Review - Nokia's Brave New Foray into WP7

The Lumia 800 is indubitably the best Windows Phone hardware out there right now. When people previously spoke in hushed tones about wanting Nokia to make Windows Phones, the unspoken reasons for wanting a Nokia WP7 device were a few notable features - a camera without compromises, hardware build quality that’s unique and solid, Nokia’s attention to detail, and Nokia's existing market share and ability to get those devices to market.read more →

AVOID

Had a lousy experience with this phone. It packed up within 5 months of purchase. It was replaced by a refurbished (NOT NEW) in warranty - the replacement also packed up within 2 months - the service centre wanted Rs 7000/- for replacing again by another refurbished phone. My 27,300/- have gone down the drain - I hope consumer court can help.
    • Lousy battery - sealed unit - so if it packs up you are in deep trouble.
