BlackBerry Storm2 9520 review: Back in Black... Berry

RIM have certainly succeeded in making their touchscreen absolutely consistent with the very BlackBerry concept. The Storm series are not shying away from innovation, but the number one purpose of innovation here is to respect tradition. There's nothing wrong with that but it's not the best way to appeal to a wider market. Anyway, the ongoing effort to match the hardware keyboard ergonomics on a touchscreen seems almost complete with the more →
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 2100 MHz 3G with HSPA support
  • 3.25" 65K-color capacitive touchscreen of 360 x 480 pixel resolution
  • Improved touchscreen experience with piezo-electric touch feedback system
  • 3.15 MP autofocus camera, LED flash
  • BlackBerry OS 5
  • Wi-Fi and built-in GPS with BlackBerry maps preloaded
  • No email support without BlackBerry Internet Service account
  • Interface not as quick as competitors'
  • Chubbier than most touchscreen phones with similarly-sized displays
  • Mediocre camera
  • No FM radio
  • No web browser Flash support

RIM BlackBerry Storm2

As more modern mobile platforms become enterprise-savvy, RIM's on the cusp of losing its identity -- and products like the Storm and Storm2 prove that it's well aware of the situation. Only problem is, Waterloo is clearly woefully unequipped to handle the creation of exceptional, effortless usability that's demanded of a lustworthy mobile device these days. The Storm2 oozes most of the same personality traits espoused by its older brother -- traits that suggest a "Bold with a touchscreen" attitude -- and when you're fundamentally rethinking your device's user experience, that's not the right attitude to more →
  • Has WiFi, unlike the Storm
  • Hardware looks great
  • Decent camera
  • SurePress still doesn't make sense
  • Awful web browser
  • No native IMAP support

Can it fix the failings of the original Storm?

We were impressed by the first Storm when we got it into test last year, but that opinion was quickly dismissed over time as we realised it's a lot harder to get used to the SurePress technology.

For that reason, the Storm 2 can't rival the iPhone or HTC Hero on our rankings - we liked it a lot more than we thought we would, but the SurePress technology just isn't for more →
  • Solid OS with a good number of features
  • Responsive touchscreen
  • Easy to use media player
  • Superbly intuitive texting
  • Poor internet browser
  • Annoying SurePress touchscreen
  • Poor build quality in the battery cover

BlackBerry Storm 2 review (Verizon Wireless)

The RIM BlackBerry Storm 2 brings some welcome additions, such as Wi-Fi, updated software, and a better touch interface, but it's going to face some serious competition from Verizon's upcoming touch-screen more →
  • The RIM BlackBerry Storm 2 adds Wi-Fi, more memory, and an updated operating system that brings a number of feature and user interface enhancements. The revamped SurePress touch screen allows for more precision, key rollover, and limited multitouch capabilities.
  • BlackBerry browser isn't on par with the competition. While improved, the touch screen still takes some acclimation.
