Yamaha has finally launched something new in India: the YZF-R2. The R2 is placed as a direct bridge between capability and price in the company’s supersport lineup. It slots right above the R15 V4, giving loyal riders a logical upgrade without increasing the asking price too much.

The Yamaha R2: Pricing & Availability
The Yamaha R2 starts at ₹2.30 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant, climbing to ₹2.53 lakh (ex-showroom) for the range-topping R2 M. However, the latter is sold exclusively through Yamaha’s Blue Square outlets. Pre-bookings are already open for a token amount of ₹10,000, while deliveries are expected to begin mid-September.

The Yamaha R2: Key Specifications & Features
At its heart, the Yamaha R2 features an all-new 204cc single-cylinder DOHC engine (liquid-cooled). It produces 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.3Nm at 8,000rpm, enough to outperform rivals like the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR on power. Yamaha borrowed DLC-coated valves from the old R1 flagship, a genuinely unusual flex for a bike at this price point.
Every variant gets ride-by-wire throttle with three ride modes (Street, Sport, Rain), along with a slip-and-assist clutch. Up front, the bike uses 37mm USD forks to keep the ride comfortable, while dual-channel ABS adds an extra layer of braking confidence. You also get traction control as a standard feature on both variants.

The mid variant adds a segment-first bi-directional quickshifter, while the top-spec R2 M adds fully adjustable suspension, adjustable levers, a faux-suede seat, and keyless ignition. On the dashboard, you get a 5-inch color TFT display with turn-by-turn navigation and call/SMS notifications. With a 149kg curb weight, the R2 is the lightest in the segment. The lightweight chassis is paired with an 810 mm seat height.

I’d say that the R2’s real trump card isn’t the power figure at all, but the weight. A 149kg supersport that’s also the lightest in its class changes how the bike actually feels to ride.
