TL; DR
  • The vivo X200 Ultra is launching on April 21 with a groundbreaking first-party 200mm ZEISS telephoto lens.
  • This “super cannon” lens can be attached to the 200 MP Samsung HP9 sensor to enable 8.7X pure optical zoom and up to 70X hybrid zoom for extreme detail.
  • The vivo X200 Ultra also gets a dedicated camera control button and a photography kit.

vivo is set to launch the vivo X200 Ultra and X200s on April 21 in China, following a month of teasers that began in late-March. Just yesterday, vivo Han Boxiao, a senior executive, shared a post on Weibo revealing an exciting feature for the X200 Ultra: a first-party telephoto lens developed in collaboration with ZEISS. Xiaomi made a concept showcase of a similar detachable lens in the past, but vivo is the first to bring such a collaboration with ZEISS to market.

Zeiss Telephoto Lens: A Game-Changer for Smartphone Photography

The vivo X200 Ultra’s “fourth lens,” a 200mm f/2.3 telephoto attached to the 200 MP Samsung HP9 sensor (1/1.4-inch), is the highlight of this collaboration. Dubbed the “super cannon,” it features a Kepler structure with three groups of 13 high-transparency glass lenses, expanding the X200 Ultra’s telephoto capabilities by 2.35 times compared to industry standards.

This enables 200mm pure optical shots (8.7X zoom), with secondary RMSC points at 800mm (35X) and 1600mm (70X)—equivalent to a 30X quality on traditional setups. The lens, supporting real independent optics, promises stunning detail, especially for distant subjects like wildlife or sports events, outclassing every single smartphone in zoom range and resolution.

There’s a Photography Kit Too

vivo Han Boxiao also detailed a photography kit for the X200 Ultra, including a casing that allows users to rotate and insert the ZEISS lens. The kit features a Type-C connection for seamless integration, a 2,300 mAh battery to power outdoor imaging, a bracket design for stability, and a dedicated video button for one-click recording.

The housing doubles as a fashionable shoulder strap, making it easy to carry. The X200 Ultra also sports a retro camera design with new color options—white with a ridged texture and red with a matte finish. A seventh feature, teased as “the best,” remains undisclosed, with Han Boxiao hinting at more surprises.

vivo X200 Ultra Camera System and Specifications

The X200 Ultra’s camera system includes a 50MP Sony LYT-818 (1/1.28-inch, 35mm, f/1.69) main sensor, a 50MP LYT-818 (1/1.28-inch, 14mm, f/1.69) ultra-wide, and the 200MP HP9 telephoto (1/1.4-inch, 85mm, f/2.27), all with 5-axis OIS. The vivo VS1 pre-processing and V3+ post-processing chips enable 4K 120fps across all lenses, first on any phone.

The device will feature a 6.82-inch 2K+ OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 6,100 mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, and an IP68/IP69 rating. However, its massive camera bump—nearly as thick as the phone (6.87mm)—has drawn criticism from users, who prefer the Find X8 Ultra’s smaller bump.

The Next Leap in Smartphone Photography

This is a major leap in mobile photography, and it’s exciting to see a big player push the boundaries like this. First-party lenses mean top-tier quality, and with vivo co-developing this with ZEISS, the image performance should be stellar. We can’t wait to see what the X200 Ultra brings to the table. Plus, with the OPPO Find X8 Ultra launching today in China, the flagship camera battle is heating up. Which one are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments.
