While iPhones are bright enough to use under direct sunlight, there are times when the screen feels too bright. It could be in a poorly lit or completely dark room where even the minimum brightness level feels uncomfortably bright. Usually, iPhone owners control the brightness using the vertical slider in the Control Center. However, if the phone feels too shiny, even at the minimum brightness level, there’s a hidden feature that can help with it.

Enable “Reduce White Point”

Reduce White Point iPhone

Reduce White Point is an accessibility setting that helps users tone down the intensity of bright colors. When enabled, the setting limits the screen’s brightness in a manner that it’s still adjustable by the slider in the Control Center, but the maximum and minimum levels aren’t as bright anymore. In addition, users can adjust the setting’s effectiveness through a slider, which allows them to decide how dull they want the screen to be. Now that you know what the feature is and how it works, let’s discuss the steps involved in enabling it.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and select Accessibility.
  • In the Accessibility menu, choose “Display & Text Size.”
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and enable “Reduce White Point” through the slider at the right.
  • Increase or decrease the dimming effect by dragging the slider.
  • If you wish to set the brightness at the absolute minimum (suitable for people with higher indoor usage), set Reduce White Point to 100%.
  • Once you’ve set the Reduce White Point to the required level, head back to the home screen.
  • Now, you can use the Control Center to adjust the screen’s overall brightness with the dimming effect in place.

For scenarios where you want your iPhone’s maximum brightness to kick in, setting a Reduce White Point switch could help. In the Accessibility menu, scroll to the bottom and select “Accessibility Shortcut.” On the next screen, select “Reduce White Point” from the available options. Now, you can enable or disable the brightness reduction hack whenever you triple-tap the side button.

Be Cautious While Reducing The White Point

While the feature helps in reducing an iPhone’s brightness below the default minimum, setting the Reduce White Point to 100% and lowering the brightness through the Control Center could result in a completely dark screen that isn’t legible. In such a scenario, the screen might not be visible, which would make increasing the brightness extremely difficult. While force restarting the iPhone could fix the problem, users should be cautious while setting the Reduce White Point.
