TL; DR
  • Sony will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028.
  • Games released before January 2028 and existing disc collections will continue to work normally.
  • Analysts expect the PS6 to launch at the end of 2028 without a built-in disc drive.

Most recently, Sony announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. It marks a decisive shift toward an all-digital future for the platform. The announcement was made via the PlayStation Blog on July 1, along with the confirmation that the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will shut down in most regions by July 2027.

What Changes And What Doesn’t?

Games already released or scheduled for disc release before January 2028 remain unaffected; you can still get them on physical disks. After that, however, new PlayStation titles will only be available through the PlayStation Store or as digital download codes.

If you already own disc-based games, they’ll continue to work even after January 2028. As Sony announced the decision, it cited shifting consumer purchasing trends toward digital as the reason, noting that digital game sales recently reached a record high.

What Does This Tell Us About The PS6?

Even though Sony hasn’t announced an official PlayStation 6 release date, analysts are drawing firm conclusions from the physical disk cutoff. The senior research analyst at Ampere Analysis, Piers Harding-Rolls, said the disc announcement certainly affirms that the PS6 will not arrive until 2028 at the earliest,

The firm’s current expectation is a launch at the end of 2028. He also concluded that the base PS6 will not include a physical disc drive (unlike the PS5 currently available), though an optional add-on drive for playing older PS4 and PS5 discs remains possible.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella went further, stating that it is now safe to assume that both the PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s Project Helix will be digital-only devices. Most recently, Xbox has reportedly been exploring ways to convert physical games into lifelong digital licenses. Nintendo, for its part, has confirmed it will continue producing physical cartridges for Switch 2.
