Samsung Might Ditch Iris Scanner With Galaxy S10

Samsung refreshes its flagship design every 2 years. In terms of external design, things remained more-or-less same with Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9, but in 2019, we will get to see the radically new Galaxy S10. We already know about the upcoming ultrasound-based in-display sensor and a recent report claims that Samsung might be ditching its Iris scanner.

The new Ultrasound In-display Sensor

The ultrasonic sensor will be placed under the display and emits sounds of ultrasonic frequency and based on the reflections from the ridges of the fingers, the fingerprint is authenticated. This technology is touted to be faster than the current generation of optical fingerprint sensors.

The other interesting aspect is that this ultrasonic fingerprint sensor can occupy a larger area under the screen (approximately 30%) which means that we can unlock the phone without the hassles of having to place the finger at a particular point.

This is the first time, that such a technology is going to be implemented in a smartphone and there is a high possibility that the market is going to follow the trend set in motion by Samsung.

We won’t miss the iris scanner

As for the Iris scanner, I don’t think that’s something we’d miss. It worked as good in pitch dark as it did at daytime, and that’s the only good think about it. The iris scanner doesn’t work quite well if you wear spectacles, if you are moving, or if your phone is too close to your face. So basically, a faster ultrasound fingerprint sensor should surely supplant it.

The new Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to arrive in three variants, 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch. Samsung also seems to be in plans of infusing a triple camera set up this time around. They might add a new 16MP ultra-wide angle lens to the already existing 12MP wide angle and 12MP telephoto lens of Samsung S9+.

Samsung Galaxy S10 will be launched in the upcoming MWC 2019 which is slated to happen in Barcelona from February 2019.
