Samsung India has made its first official launch of 2017 and it’s the flagship smartwatch Gear S3. The third generation smartwatch was first showcased in August last year. On the lines of Gear S2, the Gear S3 comes in Classic and Frontier variants. Gear S3 Classic is priced at Rs28,500 and will be available from January 18 onwards. The price of Gear S3 Frontier hasn’t been revealed yet.
The Samsung Gear S3 Classic has a minimalistic design while the Gear S3 Frontier looks a tad more stylish and should appeal to fashionistas. Under the hood, the Samsung Gear S3 boasts of an improved set of specifications.
The third generation gear watch comes with a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display (360×360 pixels resolution ). The display is shielded by Corning’s Gorilla Glass SR+ panel, which is mainly designed for wearables. The highlight of the watch is its full Color Always On display which we have seen in Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The Gear S3 is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. The Fronter variant is known to feature a military grade protection and shock resistance.
Under the hood, both of these smartwatches employ a 1GHz dual-core chipset teamed up with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. They support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, Samsung Pay and GPS as connectivity options. The Gear S3 Frontier comes with additional LTE support for independent voice-calling using a dedicated microphone and speaker on-board.
The Gear S3 duo comes running on Tizen-based Wearable Platform 2.3.2 and offers some exciting features. They come with a rotating bezel which can be used to accept or reject calls, access notifications, etc. There is SOS mode available on the watches as well.
The watches comes loaded with an army of sensors including accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyroscope, speedometer, and a heart-rate monitor.
Both the Classic and Frontier variants are armed with 380mAh batteries, which as per the company claims, can last up to four days on moderate usage. The Gear S3 is compatible with all Android smartphones running Android 4.4.4 or later with 1.5GB+ RAM. Recently Samsung Gear family added support for iOS devices as well.
