For its upcoming line of Wear OS smartwatches, Samsung is considering a return to the square design arena, which is a significant departure from the company’s long-standing adherence to circular display aesthetics. There’s speculations pointing to internal discussions within the tech company alleging preferences for using square screens in upcoming versions. Let’s look into the specifics.

Samsung considers a shift to square displays for future Galaxy Watches

Based on information obtained from a recent SamMobile disclosure, Samsung is considering using square displays for its next-generation Wear OS watches internally. Although the exact dates are still unknown, there are rumors that this change could occur as soon as the Galaxy Watch 7 series is released later this year.

However, the lack of concrete leaks associated with such a big design change raises some doubts about whether it will be included in the 2024 product lineup. For Samsung, the possibility of switching from round to square displays raises a number of issues. Among other things, the brand’s Galaxy Watches are well known for their unique rotating bezels, which make navigating through user interfaces and long lists easier.

If Samsung chooses to move forward with a square display design, it becomes necessary to figure out how to incorporate this feature. Moreover, modifications to Samsung’s One UI Watch interface — which is currently designed for circular screens — would require careful tweaking to guarantee the best possible performance on the new form factor.

Although there are difficulties with the transition, square displays have benefited from the start. Square designs, as opposed to their circular counterparts, have the potential to hold more information and improve user experiences, especially when it comes to typing interactions. This tactical change could put Samsung’s Wear OS watches in a competitive position against market mainstays like the Apple Watch, which is well-known for its durable square display format.

Adopt square displays could be a unique differentiator for Samsung in a market where circular smartwatch designs predominate. Samsung’s departure from the circular design conventions that the majority of Android competitors follow could redefine visual paradigms within the smartwatch market and give its Wear OS offerings a distinct identity.

It is crucial to emphasize that Samsung has not yet made an official announcement regarding its plans to switch to square screens. Current speculation is based on rumors and internal conversations, so Samsung may decide to stick with the well-known circular design language in later smartwatch models.
