Samsung could launch a ‘double-folding’ phone this year along with Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip successors

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to unveil a double-folding phone in the global market. Also, the South Korean consumer electronics company will bring successors to its folding phones — Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, later this year.

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Samsung is looking for a mechanism to use two hinges for the said double folding phone. Samsung has already filed patents for the design. It will be the third smartphone from the brand’s foldable lineup and the report suggests that it will debut by the end of this year only.

Samsung is said to be designing the double-folding phone with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 18:9. This will ensure major apps and video games run with desired resolutions. On contrary, the previous Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip had a 25:9 screen ratio while unfolded which was pushing developers to redesign their apps.

The Seoul-based company has earlier revealed that it could drop its Galaxy Note-series smartphones this year citing chip shortage. As such, it is unclear how it would manage, let alone increase the production of foldables. However, if it does, that should help it reach a wider global market. This could also mean that Samsung is prepping to set the foldable phones in competition with Apple’s upcoming iPhones rather than with the Galaxy Note series phones like before.

Since Samsung seems to be on an ambitious target while the shortage of chips is already adversely affecting the semiconductor-dependent companies. Industrial experts are curious to see how Samsung will manage this situation. Nevertheless, it is quite apparent that Samsung is foreseeing folding phones as the future of the smartphone industry.
