TL; DR
  • Samsung has unveiled its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage, offering sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s.
  • The new storage standard promises up to 40% better power efficiency and comes in a package that’s 16.7% smaller than UFS 4.1.
  • Samsung plans to begin mass production in Q4 2026, with the first smartphones expected to arrive in 2027.

Samsung Electronics has officially announced its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage solution, bringing substantial improvements in performance and power efficiency as smartphone makers prepare for increasingly demanding on-device AI workloads.

According to Samsung, the new storage standard delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s. That’s more than double the performance offered by current UFS 4.1 solutions. The company also claims that random read performance has improved by as much as 5X over the previous generation.

Samsung says it achieved these gains by adopting the UniPro 3.0 protocol alongside the M-PHY 6.0 physical layer, while also using optimized PAM4 signaling to improve data transfer efficiency and reduce overhead.

The company is also focusing heavily on efficiency. Samsung claims UFS 5.0 delivers up to 40% better power efficiency compared to UFS 4.1, which could prove important as smartphones continue to process more AI tasks directly on the device. At the same time, Samsung has reduced the package size by 16.7%, potentially giving manufacturers additional room for other components.

Samsung plans to start mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of 2026. The new storage technology is expected to make its way into commercial smartphones beginning in early to mid-2027, with Samsung’s own flagship devices, including the Galaxy S27 series, likely among the first to adopt it.
