India’s richest man is set to take on the oligarchs of e-retail i.e. Amazon and Walmart. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has softly launched Jio Mart, an offspring of the partnership between Reliance Retail and Reliance Jio.

It is touted as Desh Ki Nayi Dukaan, which is Hindi for – Country’s New Store. It brands itself as “A New World for Grocery Shopping”.

It claims 50,000+ grocery items, along with the run-of-the-mill offers such as free home delivery, no minimum order value, no questions asked return policy and express delivery promise.

For the time being, the service will start in a few cities in Maharashtra like Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan. It is expected to span across the subcontinent as envisaged by Mr. Ambani.

Now whether JioMart is able to repeat the success of Jio Telcom is something to be seen. Nonetheless, it has got strong backing from Reliance Retail. This is India’s largest retail chain in terms of its revenue. So in a way, this will mark the online expansion of Reliance’s brick and mortar outlets. The former already has around 10,000 Kirana stores spread across 6,500 Indian cities and towns. It boasts more than 3.5 million customers each week.
