Ever since its inception, Jio has been extolled for the extremely affordable service. Well, that’s going to change. In its latest announcement, Jio declares an additional 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to competitor network users. However, the company will be offering free data of equivalent value to square it off. Now, you may call it a relief of sorts!

But why the sudden development? If you’re wondering this, the company pushes the blame on the rule by which Telecom companies are supposed to pay their rival networks for the inter-alia calls. Reliance, thus assures that the Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) will be levied until the end of January 2020, when this regime comes to an end.

Starting tomorrow, Jio users will have to buy any of the following recharge vouchers. If you’re a postpaid customer, then the charges will reflect on your bill. Like the new 6 Paisa/min charge, the extra data will be clubbed to your plan.

IUC Top-Up voucher price IUC minutes you get Free data offered
10 124 1
20 249 2
50 656 5
100 1362 10

So, for the first time, Jio users will pay for voice phone calls. Please note, Jio users don’t have to pay to call other Jio phones, landline phones and internet calls over Whatsapp and similar apps. Needless to say, incoming to Jio number remains free regardless of who called you.

Apparently, Jio has paid around INR 13,500 crores as IUC charges to its archrivals like Airtel and Vodafone-Idea so far. So, this move aims to make up for the same. The new charges shall apply after your current plan expires. For consumers who recharge after October 9, the new charges should apply immediately.

When will the new IUC tariffs of 6p/minute be applicable for Jio Users?

For consumers who have recharged their plans on or after October 9, the new tariff will apply immediately. For everyone else, the charges will apply only after their current plan expires.

Will the new charges be applicable for Jio Postpaid users?
