Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has suspended operations at its Greater Noida factory after six staffers were tested positive for coronavirus. This is a significant setback as production lines opened only recently after getting required permissions from the district authorities.

The company is now getting all other workers at the factory tested. It is worth pointing out that the same OPPO factory also manufactures products as OEM partner to OnePlus and Realme India.

“As an organization that places the safety of all our employees and citizens at the forefront, we have suspended all operations at our manufacturing facility in Greater Noida and initiated COVID-19 testing for 3000+ employees, for which results are awaited,” Oppo India said in a statement.

The Greater Noida plant of Oppo was operational under the MHA directive of working with 30 percent of total workforce. Generally, the plant has a strength of over 10,000+ staffers.

“OPPO had obtained permission from the state authorities to resume production, following the MHA directive. As an organization that places the safety of all our employees and citizens at the forefront, we had not only undertaken COVID-19 tests for all employees at the manufacturing facility in Greater Noida but also suspended all operations at the plant. We are undertaking stringent measures to keep the employees safe,” it said in an official statement to the media.

With this unwanted operation halt at the Oppo factory, it remains to be seen how it impacts the sale of OPPO smartphones in the country.

OnePlus India, who’s production line is still active at the Greater Noida plant, said that it is closely monitoring the situation. “The health and wellbeing of our employees, partners and contractors remain our top priority,” OnePlus said in a press statement. “We are closely monitoring the current situation while ensuring necessary measures are being implemented in accordance with the Government’s instructions.”

Realme India also issued a press statement post the Oppo’ production halt at Greater Noida factory. Realme assures that it “has separate production lines for the manufacturing of its smartphones and its staff has been isolated from the workers who were tested positive.”

“We have already prepared initial stocks of our new Narzo series and some popular models including the realme 6 series in advance for our customers. As a responsible brand, sales and stocks of products are not our focus right now. We will not rush to resume production but will follow Government instructions and our OEM partner OPPO’s factory regulations till 100% worker’s safety are guaranteed,” the statement adds.
