Update: Hours after Oppo exhibited its under-display camera, Xiaomi posted Mi 9 variant with their take on the technology.

Update: Oppo headlined the MWC Shanghai 2019 stage with it’s under screen camera technology.

Oppo becomes the first one to show a working under-display selfie camera. The company showed off the new technology via its official Twitter handle. The post read- “For those seeking the perfect, notchless smartphone screen experience – prepare to be amazed. You are taking a very first look at our under-display selfie camera technology.”

The video first surfaced on Weibo, posted by Oppo VP Brian Shen. He said, ”At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality. But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away.”

You would love what you see as this could be the world’s first real alternative to notch that doesn’t add a moving part to your phone. And by notchless, we mean no teardrop, hole punch, or pop-up sliding mechanism.

Here’s how Oppo under screen camera works:

Oppo employs a customized camera module placed under a “highly-transparent” material. This module uses specialized algorithms and zoning control on the screen to capture and channelize more light. This is augmented by beauty filters and a smart algorithm that manages haze and white balance.

Oppo has been a vanguard for innovations like super-fast VOOC charging and periscope zoom lenses, currently available in their phones. It isn’t the only manufacturer that’s working on pushing selfie cameras under the display, though.

Samsung and Xiaomi too are perfecting under-display cameras and is expected to release the technology in a mid-range phone in 2020. At the moment, it’s tough to forecast the actual availability of this tech on a phone in the market. Still, tech-enthusiasts across the globe would be excited about such novelties.
