OnePlus Will Start Manufacturing In India By The End Of This Year

OnePlus event today wasn’t about the OnePlus X after all. The company however did have something interesting to share. The Chinese manufacturer has today joined the ‘Made in India’ brigade, and will be manufacturing smartphones at ‘Foxconn’s Rising Stars factory’ within the Sri City Integrated Business City in the state of Andhra Pradesh by end of 2015.

Since the import duty on smartphones has been upped to 12 percent, will prove more efficient in terms of cost and working capital. While this shall translate to better services for Indian consumers at some point of time, Vikas Agarwal, OnePlus India General Manager, also stated that this will help the company make products for sale much faster.

Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Pete Lau, Founder & CEO, OnePlus said, “Today is a big day for us. Producing smartphones in India is one of the most important decisions that we have made so far at OnePlus, and we are thankful to the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Foxconn for helping us make this happen. India being one of our biggest markets worldwide, we are committed to a long term sustainable growth path. This move will strengthen our presence and help us step up momentum in India.”

Congratulating the OnePlus team on this move, Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Honorable Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh, said, “We are pleased to welcome one of the fastest growing smartphone companies in the global market – OnePlus – to make in India. Our dream is to catapult Andhra Pradesh to become one of the hottest destinations for local manufacturing in India, and I believe with brands such as OnePlus joining in, that dream is quickly becoming a reality. The Andhra Pradesh Government assures all cooperation and support to OnePlus to help them cater to the growing demands in the India market.”

OnePlus didn’t mention exactly what it will be making in India in the first production phase.
