It has been almost two years since Micromax launched a smartphone. Many believe that the Indian smartphone maker is done with smartphones, however, this is untrue. Turns out Micromax is currently working on a new budget smartphone priced around INR 15,000/-. It will be Micromax’s first-ever 5G phone arriving earlier next year.

Micromax has been quite out of the picture ever since it launched Micromax IN 2c in April 2022. However, the recent report suggests Micromax working on a new budget-category smartphone that will be pegged at the price tag of around INR 15,000/-. Specifics about the phone remain elusive although there’s a whiff that it will use a MediaTek chipset.

Per the reports, Micromax was in talks with both Qualcomm and MediaTek for a chipset, however, the former gave a red flag given Micromax’s delayed payments. This leaves us with a MediaTek chipset onboard although the exact model remains a mystery. The original timeline for this alleged budget phone was December, however, since the smartphone maker hasn’t placed the chipset order yet, we should see the phone launching sometime in January or February next year.

Micromax India made its comeback in November 2020 following anti-China sentiments. The IN series of Micromax phones received quite acclaim from both users and critics, especially because it was an Indian brand in a market highly saturated by Chinese brands all over.

The upcoming Micromax IN series budget phone will drive 5G technology onboard thanks to the recent advent of the technology in India. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are already leading the 5G market while VI is still out of the picture.
