Marvel’s Shang-Chi gets a sequel as Director Daniel Cretton enters into a deal with the studios

Disney and Marvel Studios are working on a sequel to their recently loved superhero movie Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, with co-writer and creator Destin Daniel Cretton returning to direct.

According to the latest report by Variety, the Director is working on a new Marvel Cinematic Universe series for Disney Plus. The filmmaker has signed an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Disney-owned Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective, under which he will develop TV projects for both Marvel Studios for Disney Plus and Onyx Collective across all platforms.

Daniel will also be producing the projects through a new company he is launching with partner Asher Goldstein, named Family Owned.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Cho and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.

Freeform and Onyx Collective President Tara Duncan added, “Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience.”

“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community.” Cretton said.

Starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, and Michelle Yeoh, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings was the first MCU movie with a Chinese superhero in the lead and a mostly Asian cast. Cretton and his team didn’t dumb it down either for English-speaking audiences, with a large portion of Shang-Chi being in Mandarin. Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is Marvel’s best-reviewed movie of 2021 and the most successful too at the global box office with a total close to $432 million (Rs. 3254 crores).

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is now streaming on Disney+ and Disney+Hotstar and is available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages.
