Reliance and Disney have officially unveiled JioHotstar, a new streaming giant formed by merging JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This marks a significant shake-up in the Indian OTT space, with the platform promising a vast content library, live sports, and multiple subscription options tailored to different user needs.
JioHotstar’s launch follows the much-publicized joint venture between Reliance’s Viacom18 and Disney’s Star India, which was finalized in November 2024. The platform is set to host an extensive catalog of content, combining Indian cinema, international hits, and sports coverage under one umbrella.
The service boasts over 300,000 hours of content and will feature movies, TV shows, documentaries, anime, and exclusive premieres from global studios, including Disney, HBO, Warner Bros., NBCUniversal’s Peacock, and Paramount.

Subscription Plans and Free Tier
One of JioHotstar’s most striking features is its free tier, allowing users to stream content without a subscription. However, ads will be part of the experience, similar to JioCinema’s existing model. If you want an ad-free and high-resolution experience, you’ll have to subscribe to one of JioHotstar’s subscription tiers:
- Mobile Plan: ₹149 for three months (HD, ads, single device)
- Super Plan: ₹299 for three months (Full HD, ads, two devices)
- Premium Plan: ₹499 for three months (4K, Dolby Atmos, ad-free, four devices)
Users with existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions will be automatically migrated to JioHotstar. If you have any Hotstar or Jio Cinema subscription, you’ll automatically be upgraded to the Premium plan.

Live Sports Will Continue on JioHotstar
A major highlight is the uninterrupted streaming of live sports, including IPL, cricket tournaments, and other major sporting events. Given Hotstar’s long-standing association with sports, JioHotstar is expected to retain its dominance in this space.
With a user base of over 50 crore, JioHotstar could redefine how Indians consume digital content. While platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video focus on premium, ad-free experiences, JioHotstar’s mix of free and paid offerings is designed to capture a wider audience.
