TL; DR

  • The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has been renamed to Snapdragon 8 Elite.
  • It will first debut on the Xiaomi 15 series on October 23 in China.

The upcoming Xiaomi 15 is set to be the first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, previously expected to be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This naming was initially leaked by Digital Chat Station and has now been sort of confirmed by Xiaomi’s leaked promotional materials. Per the leaked poster, the Xiaomi 15 series will be unveiled on October 23, 2024 in China, powered by this new processor.

The change in branding from the Snapdragon 8 Gen series to Snapdragon 8 Elite mirrors a previous naming shift from the triple-number system (e.g., Snapdragon 888+) to the Gen series, and now to 8 Elite. This latest rebranding will cause some confusion, as it breaks away from Qualcomm’s previous straightforward numbering.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is expected to be based on TSMC’s 3nm process and will be unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit 2024 in Maui, Hawaii, from October 21-23. It will feature two performance cores at 4.0 GHz and six efficiency cores at 2.8 GHz, using Qualcomm’s custom Oryon architecture.

Early benchmarks suggest 35% better single-core and 30% better multi-core performance compared to its predecessor. This chip is expected to power several flagship devices, including the realme GT 7 Pro, OnePlus 13, and, of course, the Xiaomi 15 series.

Qualcomm’s rebranding may be aimed at aligning with the Snapdragon X Elite processors, trying to integrate the “Elite” branding across their product lineup.

Personally, I don’t think this sounds good at all. The lower-specced version of the Snapdragon X Elite is called the Snapdragon X Plus. And if we go by this nomenclature, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 could be called the Snapdragon 8 Plus, which, by the way, does not make a whole lot of sense.
