Instagram Like Counts are now Hidden in India as a part of the global testing

0

This morning when I opened Instagram to check my post, I noticed a difference. Bam! the like count on my posts was hidden. If you notice the same, let me tell you that there’s nothing to worry about. It’s an official update from Instagram, which was announced a few hours back. While the same was being tested in select 7 countries, the social-media giant has now expanded the test globally.

Instagram Update: Here’s what’s changed

As mentioned in the tweet above, if your account’s part of the new update, you won’t be able to see the total number of likes and views on others’ posts.

At first glance, you won’t see the like count on your post too. Now, instead of the like count, you’ll see the name of a user with whom you mutually engage the most and “others”.  However, you can still tap on “others” to see the total number of likes on your post.

The new initiative is for people to “focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.”

Instagram started off as a platform for photo enthusiasts to post, express and communicate with images. Unfortunately, over time it has exploded with billions of users and become a honey trap for marketers. In the subsequent frenzy, posts were getting packaged to garner likes. Add to the mix, the ever-changing and sophisticated algorithm of the brand. So, many started avoiding posting altogether due to a fear of small like count embarrassment.

The new update should be a relief as now people can comfortably post and express without the pressure of like count.

On the flip side, there’s no rose without a thorn and as such, this could probably cripple the influencer marketing economy. But, contrary to belief, top influencers are embracing the new change saying a real community of real engaged people will like their content. They endorse the new initiative’s good intention with respect to prioritizing mental health and authentic sharing. Further, they believe brands will start to value other metrics like saves, comments, shares, etc.

Anyhow, I would love to know your thoughts and take on the new update. You may express down in the comments.
