While the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has had a WhatsApp bot for booking tickets for a while, people can now recharge their smart cards on the app, too. Every day, millions of people step into the metro to commute for work, see their family, friends, etc. While getting a token at a metro station is fairly easy, frequent travelers often get a smart card, which allows them to use the total balance for riding across all the routes.
Previously, recharging the smart card required users to visit the help counters at metro stations. However, now, they can recharge their metro card using the WhatsApp chatbot. The feature is available on WhatsApp for both Android and iOS. Further, users can access the service in two languages: English and Hindi. All users have to do is save the number “+91 9650855800” on their phone, and they can travel without any hassle.

Follow These Step To Recharge Your Metro Card Via WhatsApp
- Send a “Hi” to the aforementioned number.
- In response, the chatbot sends a message with options to select the desired language: English and Hindi.
- Once users select the language, the chatbot gives them three options, including the “Smart Card TopUp.” Select it and tap on “Click Here.”
- On the next screen, enter the smart card number and select the amount from the available options. The minimum recharge amount is Rs. 100. Further, users can only enter the amount in multiple of 50.
- Accept the terms and conditions and select the payment mode at the bottom.
- Once you select the payment method, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the recharge. In this case, I selected the “Pay With UPI” option, and the chatbot flashed the following message: “You’ll soon receive a payment link on your WhatsApp for your QR Tickets(s). Please wait to be automatically redirected to WhatsApp or click on Continue.”
- In the chat, I received a payment request, which clearly mentioned all the details, including the smart card number and the top-up amount. I tapped on “Pay Now.” Then, I entered the UPI passcode for WhatsApp payments.
- When I completed the process, I received a “Smart Card Recharge Success” message with the transaction details.

While the feature lets users recharge their smart metro card in less than 30 seconds, it doesn’t show the current balance. If anyone at the DMRC is reading this article, I would request them to add another field in the confirmation message informing users about the total balance. Otherwise, they would have to tap the card on the AVM (Add Value Machine) provided at stations, which is slightly counterintuitive.
