Apple’s Photos app offers you the option to hide certain images. Once hidden, the selected pictures don’t appear in the Photos app or send media files on a third-party app. However, to hide the photos, you need to know exactly what to do, where to view the hidden photos, and how to restore them when the need arises. So, without any further ado, let’s dive straight into the steps involved in hiding images through the Photos app. You might want to follow the steps as you read them to ensure that there’s no confusion.

What Happens To Hidden Images On iPhones?

When you hide any picture on iOS, it goes to the Hidden album (the Album’s section in the Photos app). By default, the Hidden album is locked, which means that iOS will ask for authentication when someone tries to open it. Depending on the system’s settings, users can unlock the album through Face ID, Touch ID, or their iPhone’s passcode. Hence, unless someone knows your passcode, they won’t be able to access the photos or videos in the Hidden album.

But what if you don’t want the Hidden album to appear in the Photos app? Is there any way to hide it altogether? Turns out, there is.

Remove The Hidden Album From The Photos App

Hide Hidden Album from Photos app
  • Head to the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Now, you want to enter the Photos app’s settings. On iPhones with iOS 16 or iOS 17, the Photos app is listed toward the bottom in the Settings menu. However, in iOS 18, Apple has shifted the app-related options to a new sub-menu called Apps. It appears at the bottom of the Settings app.
  • In the Photos settings menu, turn off the toggle next to “Hidden Album.” It is this setting that shows the hidden album in the Photos app. Once you do this, the only way to view the hidden album is through the Settings app.
  • If you want the Hidden album to reappear, just retrace the steps to the Photos settings menu and enable the concerned toggle.

What If I Want To Unhide A Picture?

  • Open the Hidden album.
  • Press and hold a picture/video and select “Unhide” from the drop-down menu.
  • If you want to unhide multiple pictures, hit the “Select” button at the top right corner and mark all the pictures you wish to show up in the Photos app.
  • Hit the three-dot menu at the bottom right and select “Unhide” on the menu that appears.
